“Crossing the Bar” and “My Last Duchess”

Today, we were given two poems to read: “Crossing the Bar” by Alfred, Lord Tennyson and “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning. They are pretty interesting in their kind.

Tennyson’s poem, “Crossing the Bar”, is about death or saying goodbye. He wants there to be no sadness when he leaves to cross the bar. This type of poem would be perfect for a funeral. I agree with him to make “Crossing the Bar” the last poem in every edition he wrote. I like his other poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade” better.

Browning’s poem, “My Last Duchess”, is about jealousy. He has a beautiful lady and all of the guys want her. He automatically grows jealous of any guys that come near his girl. Browning’s jealousy is so bad that it drives the girl away. It almost reminds me of “Othello” by Shakespeare.

These poems aren’t my type, but I can deal with them.
