I went to Midlothian, Virginia tonight, to see visiting Huguenot High of Richmond, Virginia to see the Midlothian High Lancers play the Huguenot Falcons.
Huguenot had two players I wanted to see play: 6-7 271 freshman offensive lineman Kent Banks and 6-8 350 junior offensive tackle Jonathan Cawley. Banks is also well-known as a major college basketball prospect for the future. To describe him, his Huguenot Falcons squad wore gold helmets, white jerseys, green pants, white socks, and black shoes. The home Mancester High Lancers wore dark blue helmets and jerseys, white pants and socks, and black shoes.
The game was played in a pouring rain, which has no effect on 17 year-olds however. Banks may be closer to 6-5 or 6-6, but has plenty of potential. 350 is too heavy for a high school offensive lineman, and Jonathan Cawley will likely have to lose at least 30 pounds for college play.
Manchester won this game, 18-6. Although Huguenot High seemingly has a Division 1-A signee every year, this is mostly due to the fact that their coach does a great job of making sure that his top athletes are academically qualified to receive scholarships, which most coaches do not. The overall talent level at Huguenot is actually very average.

A new player to watch is Class of 2009 wide receiver Bobby Smith, a 6-4 182 rising
star who wears number 80 for Group AAA Varina High School.
The Blue Devils are located in Richmond, Virginia, and on August 31, 2007 I traveled
there to see them open their season by hosting George Washington High School
of Danville in an exciting matchup featuring two schools that would have no reason
to play each other except for some daring scheduling by the two schools.
The Eagles of G.W. have a small running back to watch in 11th-grader David Wilson.
The reason I was at this game was to observe a player who is on the eyes of probably
every Division 1-A school in the country: Class of 2010 offensive lineman Marquis Wallace
(he appears in photo at left) , a 6-3 280 prospect for Varina.
Wallace already looks like a Division 1-A player, but it was Smith, who I had never heard of (in fact, had any one heard of him?) who was more impressive in this game.
Although the Eagles won this game 24-21, it will be interesting to see if Varina keeps
utilizing Smith as a weapon for the rest of the year. Although he has thin legs, he
looks like an ACC-caliber prospect to me.
The weather for this game was absolutely perfect. I made the 82-mile drive to Varina High
way ahead of time so I could be there at 5:30 when tickets went on sale for the 7:00 game.
As I basically just scout 9th, 10th, and 11th-graders, and not seniors, this game was
a great one to watch, because underclassmen scored almost all of the points.
After senior Kendall Hairston ran for an 18-yard score to put GW-Danville in the lead,
5-11 182 junior Donald Upshaw caught a 59-yard TD pass to tie the game for Varina.
The junior running back David Wilson put the Eagles ahead again with a 74-yard
kickoff return!
Junior placekicker Zac Smith booted a 38-yard field goal for GW to put them up 17-14. Bobby Smith scored the final points of the game on a 10-yard reception, after catching a 44-yard pass just before this.

Went to see Group AA teams Liberty High School of Bedford, Virginia play
against Western Albemarle High of Crozet, Virginia in Crozet on Friday,
August 24. Boo Payne, number 85, a 6-5 215 junior wide receiver for Liberty High, did not play well, but physically has the body to play Division 1-A football. Virginia Tech is recruiting him. Only time will tell if Virginia Tech offers him a scholarship. Liberty won this game 27-0. Both teams went 5-5 last season.
5-10 195 senior running back Fuquan Goode of Liberty High ran for over 200 yards, and scored 3 touchdowns, one of which was an 89-yard fumble return.

Welcome to nkscouting.com. Last year I reported for the "The Charlottesville-Albemarle Tribune" on in-state high school and University of Virginia football and basketball, but this year they decided to use a generic Atlantic Coast Conference sports page instead. So, I'm concentrating solely on my website, which has changed names but is on it's 6th year. This website is NOT for the purpose of trying to encourage high school players to select any particular college. I travel throughout Virginia, scouting 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade basketball and football players. I'm Nelson Kane of Charlottesville, Virginia.

Starting in September of 2007, I'll be reporting again on high school football prospects in Virginia. Then when basketball season begins, I'll be scouting high school basketball prospects in VA as usual. Washington High School; Cadarian Raines, 6-8 forward at Petersburg, VA High School; and Donte Hill, 6-4 forward-guard playing for Norfolk, VA Collegiate School.

I found out from the Virginia High School League last year that there are three high schools that are going to open up at the end of August in about a month in Virginia. So I drove today to see the only Group AAA (largest classification) high school that's going to open up, Grassfield High School. It's located in Chesapeake, Virginia, not too far from the North Carolina state line. It's about 100 yards behind a Wal-Mart, but in a grassy part of town near the suburbs. Has a real nice football stadium. It's a modern high school.
If you haven't seen it yet, I'd describe it as having a side road that goes parallel along the side of the left side of the school to the stadium, which is about 50 yards directly behind the school building. The Grizzlies are going to play a full-season varsity schedule in their first year, which is ambitious, This usually results in a 0-10 season, but because this part of Chesapeake is a hotbed for high school football, it's only a matter of time before they'll be good. The other two high schools that are opening this year are Group AA high schools: Warhill High in Williamsburg and Skyline High in Warrenton.
