Keeping Pony Beautiful!

*NOTE: These cleaning tips are not for cleaning custom ponies*

My philosophy has always been that if a pony doesn't look as though it needs cleaning, then don't clean it! Cleaning should only be done to remove dust, dirt, and ink marks; or to clean or condition dirty, tangled, or frizzy hair. Unnecessary or rough cleaning may damage a pony. If you do need to clean the pony, use extra care around the eyes and symbols.

Basic "grooming":

To remove dust, simply wipe the pony gently with a dry rag.

For ink or other marks that won't wipe off, use a damp cloth. Be careful not to rub too hard! You may damage the symbols. I try to avoid the symbols, altogether when I can. You may try a bit of *non-acitone* nail polish or a dab of dishwashing liquid for stubborn marks. *Acitone will remove the symbols and other paint from a pony!*

Use your finger as a form to wrap the hair around when combing. This will help preserve the natural curl.

Hair Washing:

Try to avoid washing the pony hair. Washing the hair will remove the natural curl, and water will get inside the pony. If you find it necessary to wash the hair, you can use a mild shampoo & conditioner on it. Some people have found that soaking the hair in fabric softener really helps with dry or badly tangled hair. Be careful about this. Some fabric softeners may stain light colored hair. I use a wide toothed comb to loosen any tangles, followed by a finer comb. Be sure to shake the pony vigorously after washing, to get any water out of the body that may have seeped in.
