Text Box: BRIEF HISTORY OF THE CATHEDRAL
During ancient times, immigration was considered humiliation for Ethiopians. Whenever an Ethiopian goes abroad for government business, he normally yearns to return home soon. It was only after the Revolution of 1974 that a massive immigration has started in the History of Ethiopia. Like any other society, most Ethiopians are faithful to the culture of their ancestors as stated in the Bible, “Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots?” (Jer. 13:23), though some families who live abroad appear strangely different from the norm of their society. As one of the Oldest Christian Society in the Christendom, Ethiopians have been maintaining the true faith and Traditional Orders of Orthodoxy, building their own Churches wherever they immigrated.
It was in such a way that Mekane Rama St. Gabriel Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church was established by a small assembly of few Ethiopian immigrants in 1986. To run this assembly as a Church, members have passed through different difficulties such as proselytism, uneven settlement that hinders them to come together, lack of ministers, internal factions caused by politicians, etc. Since its foundation, the Church has been led by public authorized administrative board. Many Ethiopians have contributed to the development of the Church acting as board members indifferent times. The board has set up its own bylaws, and accomplished various duties such as finding priests, renting Churches, and collecting money for its future perspectives of having its own private building.
Regardless of various challenges, the number of members dramatically increased by threefold for the last 20 years. The faithful have shown their dedication and zealousness of owning their own building by contributing $200,200 dollars within a night.
Through the unceasing support and encouragement of His Grace Abbuna Melketsedek, Archbishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and General Secretary of the Holy Synod in exile, Mekane Rama St. Gabriel has owned its own Church building which coasted $3.55 million dollars in 2004. The sanctuary has been rebuilt in accordance with the Tradition of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and was decorated with vivid paintings.  On the basis of both the attractiveness of the Sanctuary and the spiritual services given there, Mekan Rama Saint Gabriel Church has been given the rank of “Cathedral” at the occasion of its inauguration on January 28, 2006.
Currently, the Church has 220 family members, more than 400 attendants and 5 clergymen. The Church is growing fast, acting as a religious and cultures center of Ethiopians, a place where you find many Abyssinians gathered together for marriage, funerals, and other social issues in Bay Area. It is a center where Ethiopian kids learn Ethiopianism, which includes Ethiopic language, Christian morality, and religious hymns.
