Sewing Notes

06/21/09

I recently received 3 e-mails saying the crochet and doll clothes links did not work, I tested them and they worked for me. Got me perplexed?? But it dawned on me, what might be the problem. Perhaps these folks were using Internet Explorer. I hopped on explorer and indeed that was the problem. In fact, my site looked quite yucky using explorer, and lots of internal links did not work. So, I fixed it. Here is what will look and work better now.
  1. The columns will be the same size now
  2. The word bedroom will appear where is supposed to
  3. column heading fonts will be correct now (in sewing row)
  4. and the following internal links will now work
    • help
    • tips
    • dead links
    • free pattern sites
    • crochet,etc
    • under new links area:
fake food, totes/bags/travel, money, purses, and organizers, free pattern sites (again), lady's, wedding, sewing, pin cushions, cats/dogs/personal, free pattens sites
    • and all the pattern categorizes under the everything else heading

It seems Mozilla is more forgiving of errors in code. Actually, in a few cases, I really don't know how Mozilla knew what I wanted to accomplish. Maybe messed up minds think alike!

One more thing, my husband just installed a new operating system for me. Then some of my fonts on my site did not work. Namely papyrus. ok, time to scratch my head??? I figured out, that my new operating system did not contain the papyrus font. If you would like my site to show up as I designed it to look, please check to see if you have papyrus font installed on your computer. If not, you can do a search on-line for "download papyrus font" then down load it. Unzip it, if zipped, then install it into the correct directory. How to do all that. Gosh I am not all that computer literate. Lets see if I can get you most of the way there.

First go to my site. If the words free patterns next the big tree are cute, you are set to go. The capital letters will be large. If they don't look like the letters in the big box on this site (open this in new window) go to the next step.

click on download this font on above link
You may just go ahead and store it on your desktop.

Then, unzip the file. I can't remember how I did that. I think I clicked on the zipped file, and it asked me if I wanted to unzip it. Go ahead and put that on your desk top too.

Then although I could find out where fonts were stored, I could not find out how to install it. Just moving it there did not work. So, I cheated and hubby did this last part for me.

After he did what ever he did, the font worked fine. Aren't computers more difficult than they have to be? If you don't install papyrus, anyplace that I use the papyrus font, will show up as whatever you have set up as the default font on your computer.

I just found this link that might help you out.
how to install fonts

When I hit control panel, the fonts icon was not there, I had, to hit appearance and themes first. (I have windows XP), Fonts appeared on the top in the left menu. When you hit install font, you have to find the place you parked the font. That is the part I had I hard time with. But now looking at it, since I put in on the desktop, I found it under drive c: documents and settings, Mary, then desktop, then there it was. So glad hubby found it.

I just found out the the links to Christmas, Holiday, Travel and Food to go did not go anywhere. I did not have the correct line tag, so they could not go there. I fixed that, so give it a try if that has been frustrating you. Surprised no one said anything.

Let's see, what else. I updated my 'about me' page a little bit. Nothing earth shattering, just more current info. I have been busy posting patterns. Hope you are enjoying it. Gardening will take up more and more of my time soon, so enjoy the frequent posts while they last. Now, off to the garden with me....

Oh, one more thing. I have been getting some extra nice comments in my guest book lately. Those just melt me. Every time I think I may give up this site soon, someone lays on the complements thick. I guess they are trying to tell me that they don't want me to go.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing, I mean finished deleting dead links. Will be posting a ton of new patterns in the next few weeks, so check back. I've been collecting these free patterns for years, just have not felt well enough to post them.

Hi, its me again. Who else would it be.

As I have been checking for dead links, I either replace the link with a live link, or delete it if the web site is completely dead. If I have to delete the link, I feel bad that you guys no longer have a pattern for that item, so I hunt for a new pattern for that item. Sometimes I find one, and other times I don't. But in hunting for the pattern, I often times find some patterns I was not even looking for.

I found if I enter pot holder pattern, or pot holder sewing pattern, I often only find a ton of patterns 'for sale', but if I enter pot holder tutorial or how to make a pot holder, I get a lot more results. You may want to try this when hunting for your patterns.

Bad new is, I have had to delete a ton of patterns due to dead links or because I really did not find the instructions clear enough to be helpful, or no pictures. No pictures makes me pout.

But the great news is, I have been finding sites with some extremely talented bloggers, that have posted some really neat sewing tutorials. Since, I have not posted many patterns last year due to totally messing up my feet from my 6 foot fall from a ladder, while trying to get a smoke detector to be quiet, I feel I should try to play catch up. I hope to post a ton of patterns in the next few months. I have to find a way to let you know where they are. Newest patterns, only lets you know where the most recent post is. I don't think I mention it anywhere, but if the date is in red, the patterns under that date are within the last 3-6 months.

One more thing: Since the economy is horrible, I plan to post the clothing patterns before the less needed items. I have been feeling better lately, so have spend many hours hunting for patterns. Hopefully, someone will get some benefit from my efforts.
