BACKGROUND
Mike recently retired from the York Region District School Board after 32 years of teaching. He has taught all grades from 4 to 12. In his last year as Head of Geography at Thornlea Secondary School, Mike was voted Teacher of the Year (2004-2005) by the Student Council. Mike also started training in Karate at the age of 15. He has his 2nd degree black belt in GoJu Ryu Karate. Mike created the first Martial Arts course for credit in Ontario High Schools, which he then taught for 15 years. Mike also created the first Jewish Studies course to be offered in Ontario High Schools, called the 'Jewish Experience', which he taught for 20 years. Many of his students reported back to him that it was the most relevant course they had studied throughout their high school career.

MATH AND GEOGRAPHY
Mike is a very relaxed and patient teacher who has the ability to break down difficult concepts into easily understandable ideas. He relates very well with his students and enjoys teaching children and teens alike.

MARTIAL ARTS
While Mike has taught martial arts to people of all ages, he specializes in teaching children who have been, or are in danger of being victimized, as well as women's self defense. Martial arts' training instills discipline, builds self-confidence and self-esteem, and creates a physically and mentally fit person. While Mike's students are quite able to defend themselves, they rarely, if ever, are required to do so.

JEWISH STUDIES
Mike has spent much of the last 20 years turning Jewish teens onto Judaism. Mike never tells his students what they should believe - he leaves that up to them. Rather, he explains clearly what Judaism is all about and the reasons behind it. Many of Mike's students had no background in Jewish studies or were 'turned off' at an early age. Others had a positive experience in childhood and then wanted to reconnect with their Judaism. In almost all cases Mike's students have reported that their studies deeply impacted their lives in a very positive way.
The curriculum for each student is unique and will be set by both teacher and student. Some of the most popular topics are:
1. Does God really exist? If He does, did He really write the Torah?
2. Forget what you learned in Hebrew school: what is Judaism really all about?
3. The Holocaust: how did it happen? What lessons should we learn from it so it will never happen again?
4. Israel and the Palestinians: the truth! And will there ever be peace?
5. The Disappearing Diaspora: if current trends continue there will be virtually no Jews living outside of Israel by the year 2100! What's going on? What can we do to stop this from happening?

RATES: Mike charges $55/hour in his home, $65/hour in yours. Martial arts training will take place in Mike's home gym.
