Basic Egypt Information:

Egypt is located in the north part of the continent of Africa.  It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, Israel to the east, the Gaza Strip to the east, and the Red Sea to the east.  The national capital of Egypt is Cairo.  Egypt has a republic form of government.  Egypt became an independent country on February 28, 1922.  It gained its independence from the United Kingdom.  A resident of Egypt is called an Egyptian.  The official language of Egypt is Arabic.  English and French are both commonly used in Egypt.

Egypt's Size:

Egypt has a total area of 1,001,450 square kilometers.  Egypt has a land area of 995,450 square kilometers.  Egypt has a water area of 6,000 square kilometers.

Egypt's Population:

The population of Egypt is currently 77,505,756.  This population total is from July of 2005.

Egypt's Climate:

Egypt is a country that is filled with desert land.  It is a hot country.  Egypt has dry summers and moderate winters.

Other Egypt Information:

Egypt has several natural resources.  These resources include petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, gypsum, asbestos, talc, lead, phosphates, manganese, limestone, and zinc.  Egypt has several natural hazards.  These hazards include periodic droughts, flash floods, frequent earthquakes, landslides, sandstorms, dust storms, and driving windstorms.  Egypt has several agricultural products.  These products include cotton, wheat, corn, bean, rice, fruits, vegetables, sheep, goats, water buffalo, and cattle.  Egypt has several industries.  These industries include tourism, textiles, chemicals, food processing, construction, cement, metals, and hydrocarbons.

Interesting Egypt Facts:

1.  Egypt is slightly more than three times the size of New Mexico.

2.  The Nile River flows through Egypt.

3.  The Nile River flows backwards or upstream in Egypt.

4.  Egypt has a vast desert interrupted by the Nile River valley and delta.

5.  The lowest point in Egypt, Qattara Depression, is over 400 feet below sea level.

6.  The amount of arable/soil usable land in Egypt is only 2.87% of the entire land in Egypt.
