GOD GIVES HOPE TO OUR TROUBLED HEARTS
John 14:1-4
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.”
Have you ever felt troubled and uncertain about your future? Have you ever questioned whether God realizes that your world has turned upside down? The disciples may have been experiencing these feelings when Jesus gave them this message. He had just told them that He was going to leave them, and they were extremely concerned. Yet He tells them to now be troubled, then gives them three reasons why they should have peace in their hearts.
1. We Can Take God at His Word. When Jesus said, “ye believe in God, believe also in me.” He was reminding his disciples to trust in God’s Word. Scripture has spoken not only of Jesus’ impending crucifixion but also of his resurrection. Somehow they had missed that. Sometimes we forget to look at the whole picture when our circumstances seem overwhelming. But we must remember that the words found in these pages will “remain forever” (Matt. 24:35). We can always take God’s promise at face value.
2. We are Going to Heaven. The next time you face some kind of difficulty– be it an illness, a family problem or an unexpected change in your life– remember that you are going to heaven. That will help keep everything in perspective. Your trials are only temporary. One day you will be in the presence of the Lord, and there will be no more fear, no more death, no more pain and no more sorrow.
3. Jesus is Coming Back for Us. Notice that Jesus says, “I will come again, and receive you unto myself…” The Lord is not merely going to send for us. He is going to personally escort us to the Father’s House. The Bible tells us to “comfort and encourage each other with these words” (I Thess. 4:18). In the midst of your trials, remember that God cares for you so much that He is coming back so that you can be with Him forever.
