Candidate Mhari

Common Knowledge:
It is known that she’s a decent
healer, and not a bad worker in general. Most people tend to assume she’s
childish as she looks a little child-like, but they’re disabused of the
notion if they ever see her tending to an injury in the infirmary.

Physical Description: Mhari is
of average height with longish mousey-brown hair that she generally wears
in a plait down her back. Her skin has a moderate tan, she has lived in
the southern continent all her life after all. She has deep sapphire eyes,
framed by long dark eyelashes and thin eyebrows. She has a very innocent
look to her face that’s almost child-like, this is enhanced by the fact
that she’s very thin, she actually looks underweight and thus delicate,
breakable. Don’t let her size fool you though, Mhari is far from
breakable, she’s a healer and has to have the strength to pull bones back
into place, and she does. Mhari is very fit, she goes for a run every
morning, believing that being fit is helpful in fighting off disease.
Mhari has a single almost perfectly straight scar down her left arm from
shoulder to elbow.
Personality: Mhari watched her
mother and many of her siblings succumb to the plague as a child, because
of this she has almost a phobia of becoming ill herself. She noticed even
as a young child that the fitter people didn’t succumb to disease quite as
quickly so she resolved to get fit as soon as possible and stay that way.
Mhari is constantly setting herself goals and tries to be the best that
she can be at everything and anything she does. She is quite restrained,
always thinking through any action she might take before implementing it,
she can make quick decisions when she needs to but she prefers not to.
This constant planning means that most of the other children avoided her
when she was younger and as a result she became a fairly solitary girl,
though she’s talkative enough she won’t ‘intrude’ unless invited. Due to
her retiring nature Mhari is quite a lonely girl, she’s close enough to
her siblings but it isn’t the close friendship that Mhari longs for as
those closest to her in age, Olane, has vastly different interests, and
Zubrette is 8 turns younger than Mhari and doesn’t understand her elder
half-sister.
History:
Mhari was born the seventh child and the first daughter to survive her
first year. The plague ran rife through the world Mhari was born to, her
parents having moved to Southern weyr to aid the healers at the weyr.
Mhari’s own family already knew the pain of death by plague as three of
her elder siblings had died of it two years before she was born. Mhari’s
parents, healers Mahir and Xanna were determined to have as many children
as possible in the hopes that the next generation wouldn’t have a bad
start… As a result Mhari was hardly the only young child in her household,
the youngest of her elder siblings was less than a full turn her elder.
And just over a year after her birth she gained a sister.
Not long before Mhari’s fourth birthday, her mother having given birth to
one stillborn child and another living child, the plague struck again.
Mhari’s mother and the newborn girl named for her mother Xanna both fell
victim to the plague. Mhari’s mother, Xanna, implored her husband as she
lay dying, to marry another of their colleges a girl they had both been
fond of, Odina. She implored both not to leave her remaining children
without a mother. Mhari’s elder brothers both railed at their parent’s
craft demanding why their father hadn’t been able to save their mother.
But there was no answer for the boys, so they turned their attention away
from their parents craft deciding that they would not follow their parents
into the healer craft. Mhari however chose the opposite path, delving
deeper into the knowledge she’d gleaned already.
Two turns after the death of Xanna, Mahir and Odina obeyed her dying
request and got married. Xanna’s four living children all accepted the
marriage with almost no fuss, Odina had been counted almost as a part of
the family long before their mother had died. Odina promptly bore a
daughter, Winola. Unfortunately there was another bout of the plague going
around at the time and Winola died. At about this time Mhari became an
unofficial healer apprentice at age 10.
The next year Odina bore another daughter and named her Zubrette. At this
time it was becoming clear that the plague was winding down with fewer and
fewer cases appearing. The weyr healers breathed a collected sigh of
relief and started training their apprentices to deal with other ailments
that weren’t plague related. Many of the youngsters who had proved
themselves during the time of the plague were promoted, something few
people had been able to think of doing due to either lack of energy or
time.
Odina seemed to have caught Xanna’s habit of bearing one child per year
and continued to have children, bearing one daughter and three sons in
quick succession while Mhari finally became an official healer apprentice.
At about this time Mahir decided that his brood was getting too big to
stay comfortably at the weyr so he sent his eldest children to scout the
surrounding area to find somewhere to settle outside the weyr itself but
within walking distance. So Quentin, Stephen, Mhari, Olane and Zubrette
went on a ‘journey’ to find somewhere suitable.
Late that afternoon the children set up a small camp where they decided to
spend the night, as it was getting late and they’d thought they’d spotted
firelizards and thought to search for the nest. The girls set up a
smallish campsite while the boys went looking. They returned quite late
reporting that there was no sign of eggs, not even egg-shells. The
children decided to stay the night where they were, as they didn’t want to
get lost in the dark. It was lucky for the children that they did as early
morning brought earth-shakes that rattled Pern. The children returned to
find the weyr mostly destroyed, their parents and younger siblings
crushed. Almost unnoticed in the shock of the shakes Mhari was struck by a
falling branch carving a single almost perfectly straight scar down her
left arm from shoulder to elbow.
The children came with the remaining dragonriders and the other lower
cavern folk who had survived the shakes to form Last Hope Weyr. There
Quentin and Stephen put their woodworking skills to the test to help with
the building, Mhari and little Zubrette helped the living healers while
Olane helped out the weavers whenever she could and anyone else who needed
a spare set of hands. And so the children joined the weyr and some even
stand for impression whenever they can, just like all the other weyrbrats
