Apprentice Healer
Zubrette

Common Knowledge:
Zubrette follows in her sister Mhari’s footsteps. She’s a generally quiet
girl and thinks things through as much as she can. She hates making
decisions, particularly ones that will affect others. She isn’t sure that
she has the right to make decisions that will affect others without
permission. If it weren’t for the fact that Quentin, Stephen and Mhari all
looked out for her, she’d have been easy prey for almost anyone.

Physical Description:
Zubrette is a little small for her age, but still has plenty of time to
catch up. She doesn’t keep much weight on, though she eats healthily. She
isn’t thin enough to look unhealthy, nor does she look fragile – just
small. She has dark brown hair she wears in a ponytail high on her head,
and dark brown eyes to match. Her skin is well tanned from running errands
and working and playing outside in the Southern sun. The sun also has its
effect on her hair, bringing out some reddish blonde highlights during the
summer months when she spends more time outside.
The general impression Zubrette gives is one of quiet intelligence and
energy. Having trained in her craft most of her life, she’s learned the
importance of listening to authorities and those who know more than she
does. She has also learned to control her reactions, remaining calm where
many would panic or offer a knee-jerk reaction. Jumping at a sudden noise
while working with a delicate injury is dangerous to a patient, after all,
so Zubrette is hard to startle.
Personality:
Zubrette is quiet, thoughtful and dependable. She’s confident within her
scope, but is hesitant to tread outside it. She is the youngest of her
living siblings, and has always followed behind them and been taken care
of by them. Her instinct is to let others make decisions and give orders,
and if her older siblings weren’t looking out for her she would easily let
herself be taken advantage of. She enjoys her work in the infirmary,
especially since it means being with her older sister Mhari, whom she
admires.
Zubrette has a strong work ethic, placing her duties and the needs of
others above herself. If there is work to be done, she’s doing it, even if
it means going without meals or rest. She tends to forget she needs to
take care of herself, or downplays her own needs.
History:
Zubrette was born in Southern Weyr. She was the second child born to her
mother Odina, preceded by an older sister who died to the plague and nine
half-siblings from her father and his first wife, four of whom were still
alive. At this time it was becoming clear that the plague was winding down
with fewer and fewer cases appearing.
When Zubrette was five turns old, Mahir decided that his brood was getting
too big to stay comfortably at the weyr so he sent his eldest children to
scout the surrounding area to find somewhere to settle outside the weyr
itself but within walking distance. So Quentin, Stephen, Mhari, Olane and
Zubrette went on a ‘journey’ to find somewhere suitable.
Late that afternoon the children set up a small camp where they decided to
spend the night, as it was getting late and they’d thought they’d spotted
firelizards and thought to search for the nest. The girls set up a
smallish campsite while the boys went looking. They returned quite late
reporting that there was no sign of eggs, not even egg-shells. The
children decided to stay the night where they were, as they didn’t want to
get lost in the dark. It was lucky for the children that they did as early
morning brought earth-shakes that rattled Pern. The children returned to
find the weyr mostly destroyed, their parents and younger siblings
crushed.
The children went with the remaining dragonriders and the other lower
cavern folk who had survived the shakes to form Last Hope Weyr. There
Quentin and Stephen put their woodworking skills to the test to help with
the building, Mhari and little Zubrette helped the living healers while
Olane helped out the weavers whenever she could and anyone else who needed
a spare set of hands. Zubrette became the unofficial errand girl of the
infirmary, and as she got older was given more and more specialized tasks
until she entered official apprenticeship at age 9. She’s currently too
young to stand for impression, but hopes to pursue the healercraft for now
and become a candidate when she’s old enough.
