Candidate Rolfeo
Jamie duskdog717@yahoo.com

Common Knowledge: Rolfeo is Raiwyn's younger brother, and you can tell by the attitude (and the frequent sibling squabbles) even if they only share a few physical traits. Sometimes he's a fun sort of guy, but most of the time he's nothing but a big bully with a big temper and a sullen streak a dragonlength wide. He's a good, hard worker, devoted to the Weyr and the idea of dragonrider prestige even though he probably doesn't have a drop of dragonrider blood in him. Clever people can recognize his aggressiveness for what it is: frantic overcompensation for his deep, long list of insecurities.

Physical Description: Rolfeo is a big, solid lad with broad shoulders, a muscular chest, and thick biceps. He grew fast, so fast in fact that he was insecure about his size for several turns until others his age began to catch up, but even though he's no longer unusually large for his age, there's no doubt that he's going to be a bull of a man. His eyes are pale blue, his inch-long hair is bright red, and he's covered with freckles that stand out particularly well against his fair skin. They cover his face in almost a mass across his cheeks and the bridge of his nose, and are also particularly thick on his shoulders and upper arms -- anywhere often exposed to the sun.

Personality: Rolfeo is one of those boys who isn't truly secure about his worth or his masculinity, and so overcompensates to the point that he becomes an insufferable bully. Oh, he has his times when he's a fun guy to be around, laughing and joking about all the things that boys tend to laugh and joke about, and he's a great guy to pick for your team in a game, but most of the time, he's strutting around picking on anyone younger, weaker, or moderately funny-looking. He isn't particularly smart but he excels at anything physical, partially because of his size and partially because everyone always picks him for the hard labor so he has had ample time to build muscles (and skills) in that department. Unlike his sister, he tries to behave for authority figures because he just isn't secure enough to stand up to them, but his fights and bullying have gotten him in trouble with them more than once. He is highly sensitive to criticism and has a short fuse, but even when he doesn't lose his temper, he tends to be sullen and pouty when he's upset. In fact, he's emotional enough that he'll cry when he's angry enough, but by the time the tears actually fall, he's probably punching you in the face so that you won't see it when it happens.

His better qualities are well-hidden beneath all the roughness. He's protective, and will turn right around and defend someone he normally bullies if a stranger were to start picking on them. He has a special weakness for baby animals and once kept an abandoned litter of kittens alive by bottle-feeding, though he doesn't typically share that with anyone else. He can be stubborn in a good way, and fiercely determined, and once he gets his mind set on achieving something, you'd have to beat him with a stick to get him to let go of his goal. It'd have to be a mighty big stick, at that. Pit Bull would be a good way to describe him: loyal to those close to him but territorial when it comes to strangers, and with a startling potential for both violence and affection, but thankfully almost always more bark than bite.

History: The first time that young Renolwyn got pregnant out of wedlock, it was a small scandal, but things gradually calmed down and she and her daughter were more or less accepted by the dismayed grandparents. The second time she got pregnant, however, enough was enough, and they tossed the young woman out in the cold. With nowhere else to turn, she sought refuge at Telgar Weyr, where she had heard that babies in such circumstances were the norm, and it was there that she gave birth to Rolfeo.

When you're the younger brother of a girl like Raiwyn, you only have a few options. You can either 1. Fade quietly into the background, 2. Become a quivering emotional wreck, or 3. Learn to give as good as you get. Rolfeo chose the latter. He was trouble from the beginning, but he never quite developed his sister's confidence -- then again, it hardly mattered, because he had the size to back up his attitude. The fact that, though he was raised in the Weyr, he didn't actually come from dragonrider stock was a constant cloud over his head, and it's part of what drove him to throw himself into candidacy when he became old enough.

Renolwyn was one of the many who died in the Southern catastrophe. Rolfeo took it harder than Raiwyn did, and it's still a shock that he hasn't fully recovered from.
