Candidate Raiwyn

Common Knowledge:
Raiwyn isn't charismatic in the least, but she is undeniably a strong
presence with a knack for garnering attention, both good and bad. She's
forceful, often bullying, and prone to doing her own thing even when it
gets her in trouble. Rumor has it that she has bedded a man or two in her
time, but near as anyone can tell she strongly prefers females as
partners, and submissive ones at that. She gets attached easily and there
has been more than one confrontation with romantic rivals because of her
jealousy. Many young Weyr inhabitants find her scary and best avoided.

Physical Description:
Raiwyn is moderately tall for a woman at 5'9", but doesn't carry a woman's
build at all -- she's thin, built stick-straight from the short, stray
black hairs that stick up on top of her head to the bottom of her
thick-soled boots. Rather than soft, padded curves, she's all lean, ropy
muscle, with a painfully flat chest and long, gangly limbs. Her fingers
are long, too, and probably her prettiest feature if anyone ever bothers
to notice. The only features she shares with her surviving brothers are
her pale skin and pale blue eyes, but she lacks the freckles and both
features are moderately odd-looking considering that her hair is black as
night. It has been pointed out that she and Rolfeo also share the same
haircut -- cropped to no longer than an inch or two -- but Raiwyn has a
cowlick from hell that makes it almost impossible to comb every single
hair down flat. Usually she just runs her fingers through it and lets it
go.
Personality:
Raiwyn is ambitious, but isn't the type to be sneaky about it. No, she's
all forceful personality and sometimes physical force, too. She'll bully
her way through anything set in front of her, not because she's stupid
(not at all), but because that's just what works for her. Efficient,
effective results with a minimum of fuss. Obviously she isn't sensitive
about anyone's feelings, and believes that sometimes the ends justify the
means. She's often disagreeable, sometimes downright mean, and makes a
lousy listener, but she can be surprisingly gentle with her lovers and
gets very attached to them very quickly. One would think that having as
bad a temper as Raiwyn does would mean that she's as thin-skinned as her
brother, but it's the exact opposite -- just when you think you're really
getting to her, she'll laugh it off. She's just that confident: she
doesn't have a doubt in the world about herself. Her best quality is
probably decisive action. She doesn't hem and haw over anything, she just
follows her instincts, jumps right in, and usually makes it through okay.
Wishy-washiness in others is something she despises, and she'll drag
others into following her just so she doesn't have to suffer through their
spinelessness. It's probably also safe to say that this girl isn't afraid
of anything. Her favorite chore, and specialty, is hunting tunnelsnakes,
but she'd relish the opportunity to hunt something bigger or more vicious.
Anything less active or challenging just bores her to tears, and when
Raiwyn is bored she starts contriving ways to amuse herself... beware.
The fact that she didn't
Impress a fighting dragon when several other girls did, and that she
failed to Impress Truth, and then *again* failed to Impress from Truth's
clutch hasn't shaken her confidence any. But it has certainly made her
more angry and more determined. She admires Perone very much (Rolfeo has
even teased her about having a crush, but she busted his nose for it, so
who knows?), but that doesn't mean she wouldn't try to wrest control of
the Weyr from her if given half the chance. Color equality works in her
favor, Raiwyn has decided -- even if she doesn't Impress gold, she can
still snag herself a brown or blue, or even a green, and work things to
her advantage. Somehow. She'll cross that bridge when she comes to it --
she always does.
History:
Raiwyn was born to a sixteen-turn-old girl at a small cothold in Telgar
territory. Her father was supposedly a travelling woodcraft journeyman by
the name of Raif, but by the time the pregnancy was discovered, he was
long gone, and with him, Renolwyn's hope of ever salvaging her reputation.
There was the expected blow-up with Renolwyn's parents, the usual
punishments and threats, but eventually they calmed down and resolved to
take care of their daughter and her new baby girl... she had a pretty
face, so maybe there was still a man who could be found who would take her
on.
At least, maybe there would
have been, had Renolwyn not come up pregnant again four turns later. This
time they had had enough, and they disowned the girl completely. Renolwyn,
with nowhere else to turn, sought refuge for herself and her little girl
at Telgar Weyr, and gave birth to Rolfeo a few months after her arrival.
Raiwyn has some fuzzy memories of hold life, and some of them are even
pleasant, but she's smart enough to know that a girl like herself could
never have thrived in such an environment. No, the Weyr was best for her,
plague and earthshake and all. Her mother found a steady mate in a young
bluerider, but he and a few of their children died in the plague, and
then, when they moved south with the survivors, Renolwyn and one of the
surviving half-siblings lost their lives in the earthshake.
What was there to do but press
on with her life, same as all the other survivors? She still has some time
to Impress, and she'll keep standing until they drag her off the sands.
