BIG NEWS FROM A SMALL TOWN
With its emphasis on his own personal history, "Big News From A Small Town"
is in many ways Roger Knott's most powerful album yet. Generally less acoustic
than his previous offerings, what's most noticeable is the prominence of
tight arrangements, jangly electric guitars and backing harmony vocals, all
courtesy of co-writer Micky Groome.
"Young Eyes" speaks of the innocence of childhood years, riding a bicycle
around the neighborhood chasing ice-cream trucks, taking photographs with
an old box camera, now the memories of a bygone era. This track has a beautifully
sympathetic string quartet arrangement played by Tim Lorsch of Nashville.
Moving on up to the teenage years, "A Fine Hobby" describes the early struggles
pursuing music as a professional career. Further into adulthood, he reflects
on his own extended family experiences in New York State in "Your Mother's
Daughter" and "Frisbee Street". Meanwhile, back in the UK, "Becky's House"
paints a picture of a hometown pub which provided a venue for rekindled
friendships.
Lost love gets a customary look-in in the allegorical "Tourist Town", featuring
the wonderfully tasteful steel guitar of the album's London-based producer
Steve Honest. Different aspects of love receive further exploration in "Something
I Don't Know", "Ghost From Your Past" and "One Shot Deal".
This is clearly a work of great originality, with performance and songwriting
of a quality rarely heard.
