Elvis
Presley was born on January 8, 1935. He was born to Vernon and
Gladys Presley in a small apartment in Tupelo, Mississippi. On the contrary
to his adult life, Elvis Presley was born into an extremely poor
country. His twin brother, Jessie, was stillborn, leaving Elvis
to grow up as an only child. When Presley was 13, he and his parents
moved to Tennessee. Elvis Presley graduated from Humes High School
in Memphis in 1953.
Elvis'
muscal influences were the pop and country music of the time. He was also influenced
by Gospel music and the
R&B he absorbed
on the streets of Memphis as a teenager. In 1954, he was signed
with Sun
Records
which began his singing career. By 1956, he was loved all over
the nation.
Elvis
starred in 33 successful films, sold over 1 billion records, earned gold, platinum, and multiplatinum records, and
has been nominated for 14 Grammys, 3 of which he won. He was awarded the
Grammy lifetime achievement award at 36, and he was named one
of the teen most outstanding young men of the Nation for 1970.
He also honorably served in the U.S. Army.
