September 1918

Sunday September 1
Pleasant we got up & done the chores then Leon came over & wanted to all go to the farm Hermie would not take his Auto on acct. of the President asking every body stop running their cars for pleasure. Hermie & Gertie & John went off on foot. Leon got a chance to take Paul B. to Governeur so he went & to the lake & Harrison took their car & took the rest of us & started for the farm overtook Hermies & they got in we all went to the farm & had dinner then went over back & they got a few berries. Leon came later & went after Powell to plaster home at nine

Monday September 2
A nice day got up early so Powell could get to work he fixed this hall then went on the next floor hall. Leon came about nine & has helped part of the day went over to the lake for Bancroft & up to the farm for the chores going now to Talcville to see Bert. Grace had a chance for the North Gouv. School Heard to day Don Cousins killed with an auto truck tipping over on him at Fine. Van paid me five dollar on rent to Sept. 16th after the store closed Hermie & Gertie John Mrs. Beach Grace went for a ride drove all around town & to Pleasant Valley & back.

Tuesday September 3
Pleasant the fore noon Powell had to mix his own mortar but Leon came & found Bert he had been in the woods all night & had no breakfast not diner nor supper the day before & was nearly starved Leon came up & got him his dinner he then went to work & mixed mortar & helped all around Powell plastered the back hall on the right side for a starter got it done & went to the front room up stairs & got it most done

Wednesday September 4
Pleasant but lowery toward night Bert came to work about eight Powell plastered the bed room & Bert mixed mortar I worked there all day Grace done the cooking & went to the farm with Leon in the P.M. & got all kids of vegetables & five lbs of butter at the factory 40 cts per lb whey butter. Masters boys paid their rent & went to their mothers in Adams house Don Cousins buried today.

Thursday September 5
Rainy last night & all day to day steady Bert came to work & they plastered all day I worked there & Grace done the house work Leon here quite a while he made a new mortar box & this evening I all alone the boy here most all P.M. Clint took him home to night. Leon expected to go to the fair at Ogd. But rained to hard. Powell plastering the bed rooms.

Sunday September 8
Quite a nice day did not get up very early Leon here to dinner & supper. Powell here Grace & I & Leon went to the upper farm & got eatables Grace went to see if Florence & Harrison wanted to go but they going to Lumleys to dinner & they went for Gertie & they did not want to go Gertie not feeling well. Hermie & John gone we met them on eastman hill we came back & he stopped to milk after we got back Grace cooked supper & they were all over went to bed at eleven Vin Wood & Sam Morris to go tomorrow morning to the war.

Wednesday September 11
A pleasant day but a very cold morning & night last night froze everything nice green fields of corn & tomatoes beans Potatoes buck wheat & vines all black & lopped to the ground. Bert did not get here till eight we did not get a very big days work done. Grace sick & did not get up till near ten. Powell plastered the bed rooms on the side over store No. 2 Hermie Gertie John Leon & Florence & Harrison up a while in the evening. Leon went to the upper place. Sent to Gouv for xxx by Webb xxxx for 3 floor.

Thursday September 12
Cold & cloudy rained a good while in the night last night rained a little today. Leon took Gary Hall to the farm to look at the thrashing machine the men started on the big front room Grace sick again to day. Paid Bert one $ & gave him cucumbers & crab apples.

This was the last entry made in the Date Book for 1918. Forty six days later, on Monday October 28, 1918, Nettie Andrews died at the age of 62. Her death certificate listed the cause of death as “bronchial asthma”. Back to Main Page
