March 1918

Friday March 1
another nice day begins to look like sap weather. I out nearly all day running all around trying to get the water & fixing the store & hall door I to Florences for dinner & to Gerties to supper. Van worked at the water & other chores Up to Bancrofts a couple of times to see about Hermon trouble. Mrs. Stevens gave me a check for rent. Lawson here with my horse & he looks like a skeleton just skin & bones. Gertie & I up to Florences in evening & Gertie got our mail.

Saturday March 2
Pleasant but quite strong wind Becksteads men & Van worked four hours at the water pipes & did not get the water the last two or three pails of water I made a brine of it used I presume ten lbs salt & filled the pipes with brine after they were connected and in an hour or so the water came & ran all over the hall floor & a little down on Wises. I went to Earls to see about Hermon deal but did not see him went down in cellar on other side & found my potatoes all frozen & water shut offs frozen.

Sunday March 3
A cold wind but clear the wind blew a perfect gale all night last night I got up a little before nine & ate my breakfast then done up the work mopped the floors & fed the hens & then Florence came with the boy we staid here a while then got ready & went to Gerties & staid to dinner then Florence & Hermie went over to Eddie Beaches & took the Baby calling on Vivian. When they came back we came back I came home & Florence & baby went to Lumleys. Harrison was to Harrisville to drive for Petrie none of. Gertie & Hermie down later in evening Mrs. Webb in.

Monday March 4
Cold morning & cold wind all day but not like most of the cold winds this winter, Pleasant no storm. I went to Governeur to law suit adjourned one week I went to Loan Office & paid my dues & went to Lawtons to see about step stuff being sent went to Saidels & Pruyns & bought about three doz prs of hinges & talked with Wryley about pump & engine heard no sugar there nor Canton to get more than two lbs at a time. Corneilus Brown’s body expected there this morning from N.Y. died there. Got home about 8-30 Gertie on train from Talcville bought coffee at 13 cts per lb.

Tuesday March 5
quite warm but stormed a little all the time & raining to night. Van lathed all day yesterday & part of the day to day & worked at water pipes part of the time put on new shut off in pipes under Miss Stevens & fixed pipe down under Wise. I over to Wises to dinner & to night she went to the movies to see the Camp Devon pictures & other camps & I tended the Baby they brought him over here. Leon has not been up since he got up on his ear just as well. Gertie stopped when she came from school took some H. berries going to write to Minnie to night.

Wednesday March 6
Cold wind but pleasant nothing doing I fooling around Van worked ½ hour then quit said he sick. I to Fs to dinner then came home Gertie got my mail & brought up Staid a while Mr. & Mrs. Webb here all evening we trying to talk deal on farm. I took my papers from box locked since the fire & put them in my new automobile box & locked them up. Van in & talked farm but has nothing to do with he says. Florence over a few minutes to look at catalogue Went to bed about ten. Sent a letter to Minnie.

Thursday March 7
Cold morning & snowed last night a couple of inches but the sun came & warmed up & melted the snow. I did not do much. Over to Florences a little while & in evening went after mail & went to store. Florence wrote a card to Grace for her & I March 8th brought back. I went to Bancrofts with checks to pay Hermon tax but he gone so sent the checks to D. R. P. Parker Webb going to mover over the river & live in Woodcock house don’t know what I will do with the farms will probably have to sell them.

Friday March 8
Still cold but sun melts snow & eaves run but cold wind I went out too or three times to see about several things Leon got me four bunches of lath to Edison Maybees paid Cts per bunch I gave him a two dollar check I trying to make a deal with Webb on store or farm Leon here this morning I tried to get him to go to work & help run the farms & pay up the debts but would not, I made a deal with Webbs for furniture & paid him in dishes 11 oclock nearly must go to bed.

Saturday March 9
A very cold wind & stormed a part of the time. Van worked on other side finished the lathing & boarded up the basement door glass broken & enlarged the cow stall in the barn & done odd jobs paid him seven dollars his due at night. Crandall came on night train not going to stay here longer Got a letter from Minnie at night said no sugar only a little for table use. Said Nett got a tellegram from Spartansburg that Ray had an operation for Appendicitis. She talking of going there. Lalone taken to hospital on noon train Expected letter from Grace.

Sunday March 10
A fierce day the worst yet I heard some say wind blowing & snowing that flying & piling. Here alone a good deal of the time. Crandle here & sold me his stuff except clothing & dishes & some bedding. Van fed hens & did chores she here a little while Mrs. Crandle did not come staid with his people. I went in & helped him pack a trunk of dishes. Bought his Axe & some other things every thing cost me nine $ & a week’s rent. Gertie & Hermie & John here all the eve Van shoveled the walk. Stopped snowing & wind gone down. Did not see Florence nor Harrison nor Leon.

Monday March 11
A fearfull cold morning in the wind but pleasant I got up early & got ready for Governeur had a suit with Griffin of Gouv. Who tried to collect for work not done. I went to Lovelands & The Loan Office & Kinnies & bought 60 rolls wall paper a lot of door hinges & small water pipe to thaw out the larger pipe Webbs came back to day. Van did not work I had nothing for him to do so cold out side. Got home about 8-30 & Gertie up with the mail & Webbs in till eleven oclock got a letter from Grace to night.

Tuesday March 12
Warmer thawing quite a lot the Ground covered with slush I been seeing to things all around & planning the rooms on the third flooron other side. Van worked all around set some partitions & cleaned out snow & shovelled some snow. Gave Crandall a nine $ check to pay for his goods. Sold the wash tub & board to Mrs. Webb. I over to Florences three times took over some hucke berries for pies Mrs. Lumley sick again Florence up to Lumleys most all day with Mrs. Lumley I over to night for the mail & went there came home about nine.

Wednesday March 13
A Beautiful day clear & not very cold snow melted a lot Van worked on setting partitions on third floor worked a little in other places. I rented the flat over Mrs. Stevens to Webb till the first of Nov. for ten $ per month & can have the Horse for $125 & take him any time. I sent a check to Loveland & Mrs. Webb wrote a letter to her brother to come to work as Van is going to Sugaring. Leon loading a car for Stevens with Lumber. Wanted to go to Watertown to auction but did not go Webbs put their Piano in block came to day

Thursday March 14
Thawing again to day snow fell a couple of inches last night raining hard this P.M. I been to P.O. & to Florences a minute. Van not working for me gone to cut wood for sugaring. I over to Florences this evening & Leon over there Gertie just got home on the train and nine oclock & a little after. Mrs. Webb wrote to her Brother to come & work for me. Paid Van two $ turned the other two on his rent. Leon going to Governeur tomorrow he said with loads of sleds sent a check to pay Gov. taxes.

Friday March 15
A very cold day to cold to be out much but phoned to see about roof paint also to see if my freight came paper came they said. Leon went to Governeur with a load of sleds or two loads rather I did not do much 11 & Leon not back yet I don’t think. Van did not work for me. I sent by Leon for what remained of the doors on the house & he brought them five broken & most worthless. I went to Harrisons a little while at night & got the mail Gertie came home with Adams I think Baby gone to bed did not see him.

Saturday March 16
A cold wind but other wise quite nice I got up & worked around & Gertie came down & we went in the basement & got berries & Leon came & took some gave Mrs. Webb a bottle & was mopping when who should come but Grace did not expect her. I went over & had Harrison being the Baby over & we kept him till late at night they went to the mens supper. Grace came home late after helping Florence up to Lumleys with the baby going there to stay with Mrs. Lumley he to Jayville. Leon & Van scattered buckets going to tap Woodcocks bush.

Sunday March 17
Another cold wind & cloudy not going out any don’t think Leon here part of the time he ate dinner with us Grace gone up to Lumleys where Florence is. Mrs. Webb in an hour or two Grace went in & played a little on their Piano later Grace Florence & Harrison came down & Leon came back & Hermie & Gertie & John came & all here all the evening most of the went into Webbs & Grace played the Piano Mrs. Webb in here a while we went to bed about ten Grace feeling well & eating & sleeping well. not cold.

Monday March 18
Warm & thawing I think sap must be running freely but don’t know cloudy & going to rain Florence over a few minutes. Got a wick for oil stove & paid thirty five cents for it how is that. I went on the roof & shoveled some snow & where it was dry patched all the holes could find with tar paint & baging. Bert brought up my wood this morning I went ot Depot to night & met Gertie & paid freight bill on water pipe & paid paper freight to day told Leon to day to get the paper Grace went on morning train Gertie for her I got breakfast

Tuesday March 19
A fine day overhead but wet & sloppy under foot. I moped & cleaned back room to paint floor then P.M. went to Charlie Stones auction. I bid off a lot of stove pipe a sink & single harness & a couple of chairs some carpet & a couple of mattresses. Coma back as far as Fs & stopped & staid to supper. Charlie Stone said he would deliver the things down so brought them before I got home. Reed from Hermon auctioneer he brought tax forms from Hermon I gave him the rent to collect at Hermon Worthington here to look for rooms to live in.

Wednesday March 20
A nice day not cold nor much winds stiring what there was was in the south & s. west I went after the mail at night & went into Florences a minute. Got a letter from B. L. Webb wanting a few Buckets. Bert came to work & he got up my wood & carried up the things I bought at auction & cleaned some in the other side & brought up plaster a little. Bancroft here after pay for tendering suits 15.50 he wants. I tired out nearly tonight. I tried to get Bert Bloss on the phone but he away sugaring. I got Bert a loaf of bread & he went home. Florences birthday.

Thursday March 21
Pleasant the thawing the water running & terrible sloppy the wing in the south & S.W. what there was. Hermie went after Gertie with the car I here all day most went down in Arbas after my rent said he would not pay said I would have to pay for damages for the water coming down from the brick wall did not pay. I over to Florences a little while & at night went in a minute then got the mial & come home. Bert worked for Leon.

Friday March 22
A very nice day the wind what there was was in the south in morning & S.W. at night. Bert worked in the woods with Van till noon then came here about one oclock could get no dinner Leon gone to the Junction with a load of calves. Leah did not get him any so I had to. He worked here in P.M. on the other side carried up some plaster & cleaned up in general. Gertie Florence & the Baby up a little while Told them to get tickets from Meldrim for the show don’t know if they went Leon came back did not see Grace she gone to Potsdam. Bert staying here to night.

Saturday March 23
A very cold wind fierce in the morning but got warm toward night. I worked at house work P.M. but helped Bert wash out some clothes for him to wear he so dirty. Bert went & worked for leon P.M. & loaded pulp wood. Gertie up a few minutes at night. I over to Florences with Gertie a few minutes when I went for the mail. Bert cleaned a little around the other side besides his washing. He staid here last night. Arthur Scotts wife here in the evening. The wind in north or north east. Heard Sarah Watson not expected to live.

Sunday March 24
A pleasant day but cold wind in north sap not running much Van brought down some of their syrup & it dark & strong just like the last runs usualy. Leon here some of the day & till late at night. Hermie Gertie & John & Florence & Harrison went out to Minnies with Hermies car got back about eight oclock they all here but Lumleys in the evening had pop corn Leah here too. They said Eliza (Eliza A. Grandy, her sister) had Pneumonia & John (Alverson) had a shock of some kind. Minnie & Ray better John H. sick. Grace come to Aunt Elizas with Adds folks

Monday March 25
cold in morning but got warmer & thawed a lot in the sun Leon & Bert loaded pulp in car in A.M. & Bert worked here in P.M. Leon & Van went to the woods I worked all over where I needed. Nert Guiles worked at the water pipes to get them thawed out but did not. Bert Wears tried to thaw them in the P.M. I went & phoned to Hermon to see how Eliza was said she resting comfortably the neighbors said their phone not allowed to ring. I over to Florences a few minutes & she came back with me for butter for baby.

Tuesday March 26
A cold day snowed a couple of inches last night. Leon took Bert to load some pulp then he came back & sorted the potatoes & worked all around where needed. I see to every thing & cooked & did house work. Gave Mr. & Mrs. Webb my tickets for the movies & they went Leon not here Gertie up with the mail & over to Florences a little while. Did not hear from Eliza. Heard Sarah Watson better they thought. Terrible war news & heavy explosion in Jersy City paper states & would like to go to see Eliza but no way to go. 11 oclock to bed.

Wednesday March 27
Pleasant but cold froze very hard last night the ground solid. I got up before seven Bert here to work just after breakfast Brown came & called me & said I wanted on the phone Terry called to say Eliza could not live over 24 hours & to come if I wanted to see her so we planned Leon & I to go right after dinner but about ten oclock I got another phone from Nell saying Eliza dead died at nine oclock then later got another about four saying the funerel to be Saturday at one oclock. Clara coming but John not said it would be impossible for him.

Thursday March 28
A nice pleasant day but cold no sap weather yet people made a little poor stuff I washed & mopped clear through went over to F. met Gertie on the street & we both went to see the boy he just going to bed came back & read the papers Leon up a while this evening hasn’t been doing much this P.M. Bert worked here split Webbs wood for nothing nearly. Don’t know yet how going to funerel not what will wear every thing so high. The car not ready to run not the roads to bad to go with it. Not the numbers not gotten. Leon got to fix it.

Friday March 29
A fine day over head but got pretty muddy before night. I mended a little & ironed a little over to F. two or three times to see about clothes xxx xxx xxx. I went up to Earls to see if he saw Lawton about xxx & other errands. Went over the river to see Ashcrofts. Gertie up a minute in the evening leon & Lawson went to Dekalb with each a load of calves did not get back till near eleven. Bert went back to do the chores in Lawsons place I cleaned & pressed my black skirt & picked out a black waist at Harrisons.

Saturday March 30
A fine day pleasant & quite warm got up at six & did up the chores & took my hat over & had Mrs. Thompson put some ribbon on it then dressed for the funerel Leon got a buggy & drove his horse & he & I went in one buggy & Gertie & Florence went in another got there 12-15 The near relatives all there but Gertie Grandy & her man & Lelands wife & Harrison & Hermie Ray Grandy there home on furlo We started home at 6-15 & arrived at 8-15 Leon pretty tired after getting warm & doing chores they went home Leah came up & went home with him Clara there got there Friday night about five. Grace & Nett & Ray came with Minnie & Ray. Eliza put in vault.

Sunday March 31
Easter Sunday. A beautiful warm day but hazy like rain to night. I been alone most all day. Florence up to Lumleys to dinner. Hermie & Gertie in the car all day most I guess Leon here a while this morning. The roads drying fast & sap must run fast too I think. I went to walk around the river square going to stop at Ashcrofts but they gone to Pitcairn. Leon came over said he met Mc folks going over to his house. Gertie & Florence & Harrison & the baby up a little while to night I did not set my clock ahead last night got the same old time. (Wartime - may have been the first Daylight Savings Time)
