January 1918

Tuesday January 1
Very cold but warming up some. Grace not very well I not very ambitious not feeling just right came near having a fit of the blues I think. Gertie here once & Florence sent the boy over to us to tend Harrison here a couple of times & Florence too she going over to the dance a little while & we are to keep the boy. Got a check for Mrs. Stevens rent 16 D Oshea worked on window putting in glass & puttying them. Water frozen up & he started to take up the pipe. Leon & Leah here & just went home.

Wednesday January 2
Another cold & I did nothing to amt to anything & Grace dumping yet would not let her go in the cold & had no water. Oshea worked all day on the waterpipes & did not get the water Grace sewed a little Leon & Lawson went to the farm cut maples & brought wood to Payne. Cow no better Leon & Leah up Mrs. Oshea went home to her mother on night train which was very late. Hermie went after Gertie to Talcville to night with the Auto not much snow but the ground covered with ice.

Thursday January 3
Still cold a piercing wind Grace better & doing a little went to Florences at noon staid til night I romed around but amounted to nothing much Crandall paid me six dollars rent. Heard to day that will Cory was buried to day & Bert Traver also & Birdie Stammer. Grace brought the boy over to night got three teeth. Oshea worked on water pipes all day most only fixed one window in back of Arbas. Leon drew Ice for Frandy & suffered with the cold a piercing wind Lawson xxx chored.

Friday January 4
Just as cold as ever Grace got up & went on the train to Gouv. I was going but too cold Gertie walking to Talcville all the week. Leon drawing wood for Ashcroft. Grace bought her a new coat paid . Have not seen any of them but Hermie & Leon Lawson went after hay said the cow still fasting. Grace gone to Gerties & after ten oclock. Grace bought tar paper & felt paper from Clevelands & wall paper from Kinnies Gertie & Hermie came home with Grace & they stopped to Harrisons Leon here till bed time.

Saturday January 5
A little more moderate & I done a little house work & washed a little Grace washed a little & cooked a little Oshea worked at the water pipes & to night he quit because I wanted him to work ten hours. Heard Dale Miller & Edishal Rose Married New Years, Leon suffering with Exema face all swollen up. Gertie went to train to find out about the trains. I staid alone all the evening :Lawson went after hay & said the cow better.

Sunday January 6
A little warmer but still pretty cold. We did not get up till most train time Grace had to hurry Leon came over & went to train with her Old Lawson carried her suit case over. Hermie & Leon & Leah & Getrtie & John went over to Canton with the Auto about noon they started. Lawson left here to do the chores (late) They came back about seven had a nice ride to road fine found them all well & had a good visit Came to Harrisons & staid a little while I went over there in the evening. Sam Morris moved out of Leser building I alone to night Grace went with them.

Monday January 7
Warmer & thawing some I not doing but little no one to work. Leon not doing a thing sitting around the stores Lawson not doing only chores & drove to the farm toward night after the milk said the cow no worse. Read a letter from Minnie Hermie brought said she tired of eating corn syrup could get no sugar only one & some times two lbs to a family. Van went this morning Leon took Erb Kerr up to look at the cow said she freshened & a little better. I over to Florences to night.

Tuesday January 8
Growing colder stormed & the snow blew all day I done nothing only cleaned cupboard besides the chores. Leon & Lawson killed hogs & Erb Kerr helped them 2 from leons & one from farm. Another cow ailing he thinks. He tellephoned to Dr. Baker to night he coming on morning train. Crandall moved down from third floor in back rooms. Mr. Webb spent all the evening at the water pipes to start the water. The train late near nine oclock Gertie had to wait at Talcville.

Wednesday January 9
Colder & the snow blew & road filled in, I same as usual amounted to noting so rough I did not like to go out. I went over to Florences a while to night & see Gertie on the street a minute. Leon been to the farm nearly all day met Baker at the train & took him to the farm then went after wood for Paynes. The cow died to night the second one the doctor could do nothing she freshened last night. Warren Payne died this morning. Leon went back to the farm in P.M. but the cow getting worse & he could not save her.

Thursday January 10
cold & snow blowing not a nice day to be out I went over to Florences this P.M. & held the boy an hour or two he feeling fine & as fat as a pig. Mrs. Lawson still ailing coughing nights which takes all her strength Eight oclock & the train just coming Gertie will be very tired. Leon & Lawson went to the farm & skined the cow & drew her off. I only done house work must write to Minnie right off. Mr. Paynes funerel not yet waiting for Jay he coming The snow plow came up this morning before the train. I all alone rather lonesome.

Friday January 11
Moderate & pleasant I doing nothing scarcely no water went to see about getting it turned off to fix pipes got three lbs. Sugar at Wises at eleven cts lb everybody hollering for sugar not to be got I lent Ermie two lbs today. Florence Boyce came last night to her fathers funeral Leon & Lawson drew wood for Jimmie Webb with both teams. I over to Bletts to see about taxes Corporation tax 66.94 I think & school tax 58.31 some tax I can’t pay all the taxes.

Saturday January 12
Mr. Payne buried today. Cold & stormy wind blew all day I mopped & the wind blew so I did not go out much. Leon sawed a little wood & run around did not do much. Leah & Leon up at night said the man at their fathers sick is worse and don’t expect he can live name Wheeler. Gertie up a while then we went to Florences a while then came home. Yesterday I sent a five lb. box of sugar to minnie paid eleven cts. A lb & paid two cts a lb to send it. Flour is thirteen dollars per bbl & pork from thirty to thirty five cts a lb Leon got three dead hogs over home near six hun. lbs.

Sunday January 13
A fearful day stormed & wind blew & snow flew. The train changed time again & came at noon nearly. Hermie down this morning & went over to Leons Leon did not come over till toward night I think I went to Gerties about two oclock John came down after me with his sleighs & drew up & drew me back to night. Hermie & Gertie came down later & Leon & Leah came here & wanted supper. They said the not much better the Peabody girl there for nurse. Have not seen Florence no baby to day Baby got four teeth.

Monday January 14
Getting warmer stormed all day & wind blew the snow in piles. Hermie & Gertie walked to Talcville this morning but he took the horse & cutter to go for her to night not a train yet to day & most ten oclock I went to Bancrofts to day but he busy stopped to Florences a while done nothing much to day no water. Lawson went to the farm after a little hay Leon doing nothing much snow piled the road full. I trying to get an order made out. Lawson got my paper over from the depot to finish this third floor walls.

Tuesday January 15
Stormed all day & snow getting awful deep not much doing Leon over home most all day but here now lieing on the lap. It is train time now but hear nothing of it may not come at all came last night after eleven oclock Gertie went on train this morning I went to Bancrofts & had him make out papers for me & I went to Florences to dinner & helped her do up the dishes then came home. Wheeler is getting better they say. The train came at nine oclock & Gertie came & Mrs. Crandles brother came to Crandals. I went to Webbs a few minutes.

Wednesday January 16
A little warmer & stormed most all day Griffis came on morning train to plaster but to cold & nothing ready. Leon not well covered with exema, he & Lawson going to farm after hay & to see to things I done practically nothing callers here most of the time. Ermie & Millie Scott here & this evening Charlie Stone came to hire the store to put his good in to sell them. The train coming ten to eight. I went over to Florences a while to night. Webbs all in here & Leon came I did not even have a chance to go for mail. Went to bed at a quarter past 11.

Thursday January 17
warmer this P.M. I done very little Griffis came back to day but the lime not here yet he got mad because he could not go to work & left & took his tools. Leon put the pipe on the stove & worked at the water pipe a little while this P.M. I read a letter Gertie got from Minnie she in need of sugar haven’t seen or heard from Grace in most two weeks Train must be late again to night. To nights paper said that all industries & places of business must be closed for five days commencing tomorrow morning to save coal. Arba wanted 1.25 for sassafras per bottle.

Friday January 18
quite a moderate lot of people in town first day for a while people could get out from country. I not doing much little house work went to Florences a few minutes Leon went to South Edwards & to the farm after old iron for some one. Bancroft came here to see about Packs business. Got a lb of butter from Minnie last night. The papers full of dissatisfaction about order to shut down all business places. Crandle paid me four dollars rent to night rent Jan 4th to Jan 18th 1918. Gertie walked home come up the track she up a few minutes.

Saturday January 19
growing colder storming a little & blowing. Lawson went to farm after hay & Leon here most of the day done nothing much I had him put in a window sash & he smashed a light of glass I up to Brancroft but did not see him & to Florences a couple of times. Gertie up in day time after cream & up in evening an hour or two. The roads hard. Settled up with Arba the first time since the fire he paid out & furnished store pay to the Amt. of 82 and the rent 220 dollars 11 months leaving 137.49 which he gave a check for & I deposited it.

Sunday January 20
very cold I got up at eight & cleaned up some & then got ready & went over to Florences & helped her get dinner & Leon here & he got ready & come to Florences & Hermie & Gertie & John were invited there to dinner we staid till seven oclock then came home. Mrs. Webb in & paid for milk 1.04 & I in there to Webbs a while. Crandals boy sick to night. The Girls put up a package of sugar to send to Minnie tomorrow 5 lbs. The country all worked up over the law to close all places of business every Monday for ten weeks don’t know what it will amount to.

Monday January 21
A little milder & pleasant but the stores & business places closed except grocery stores & they in the P. M. I went to Earl Bancrofts to fix up the Pack business & to the Depot to see about having my mortgage recorded over again or renewed & get freight bill. Bancroft came down & took bill & check & sent them to Syracuse. Got a letter from Minnie to night & Ray Grandys letter in it quite interesting letters I had a house full of callers & business people to night one to get a job plastering & one to hire store & Gertie Harrison & Florence Leon Mrs. Webb & family 10-30 must go to be alone.

Tuesday January 22
Clear & cold most of the day Stormed a little in the morning I not doing much. Leon & Lawson went to went to south Russell After logs with both teams. Have not been out much built a fire up stairs & did a little work. The boys came again to see about the store I went & talked with Arba he said he would not let them have it if it was his but they made good promises & decided to let them try it. I asked then twenty dollars per moth of five dollars per week I expect I will have trouble with them won’t do as they agree I presume.

Wednesday January 23
Clear & cold most of the day nothing here I need soft water & water frozen up (probably rainbarrel). The boys here again after the store I went down & we talked it over & think they will have it. Oss Noices folks had a boy born to day. I wrote quite a long letter to Minnie & did not go to bed till 11-30 Gertie walked home from school & stopped here a few minutes The teams went after logs again. Leon here to breakfast. I don’t think much of waiting on them they won’t help me a single bit furnished Old Lawson wood all winter besides the room is spoiled

Thursday January 24
cold stormed a little but to cold to snow we let the basketball team the store & they carried out the plaster up stairs & put the counters & tables under the back porch carried up some of the other goods. Leon & Lawson went for logs & the little team got away from Lawson & ran away caught them & took them back & got their load. I done nothing but house work & see to the moving bought beans & pop corn & buck wheat flour from Crandals. I over to Florences a few minutes. Harrison here after babys bottle. Leon eating his breakfast here can’t get it home.

Friday January 25
Stormed most all day quite hard no freight but snow plow up & passenger trains I doing very little Leon came early to breakfast & they went after logs. Florence came over this forenoon after me to come over to dinner to vegetable soup. I went & staid fill four oclock this P.M. I thought perhaps Grace might come to night but no. Leon going to stay here he says to night Leah gone to Russell with Blanche Boscoe to visit Millie Thompson Hulett Colvins People visiting in back party to Crandals.

Saturday January 26
Clear & very cold I think last night about the coldest of the winter. Leon staid here & went to day after logs came back & had dinner & went to Den Watsons after hay. No train but the plow yet near seven P.M. I over to Florences a few M. but the boy up to Gerties Van Oshea back to Webbs to work in mines. The wind blew & snow piled so lot of the teams did not work. The train came to night but Grace did not come no one up here but Leon he gone home to stay I went to Florences a few minutes the boy asleep bought two sacks of flour today.

Sunday January 27
A very cold & clear day not many stiring to cold to go out much got up after eight & had breakfast then worked at house work washed the floor of little room & other work then had callers & Gertie came down after me to go up for dinner. Leon here part of the time I went home with Gertie & staid to dinner then after a while came back to Florences & spent a few minutes then came back & see to things & soon Hermie & Gertie came & John & Leon here staid a while then went back to Florences a while then all went home& I here alone going to bed at 11-oclock.

Monday January 28
Clear & cold but got a little warmer at night I did not try to work much so cold & no water froze for the first time in the front room the coldest night we have had Gertie went a foot & Hermie went with her & then went down on the train & came home with her. Leon & Lawson went after logs. Only one train that at noon Stores all but groceries closed & them in the P.M. & they could sell nothing but eatables. Pool room & Movies open but other places closed. I went over to Florences & staid & tended the boy while they went to Gregories to play peanuckle to learn how.

Tuesday January 29
Colder agin the wind rose in the night & the snow piles Leon did go after the logs he brought a big stick of timber in the house & made a sleigh bunk & Lawson done the chores I got his meals to day & Leon went home to meals. No trains at all to day not even the snow plow. Hermie took Gertie & went for her with a horse. I over to Florences to night & down in stores & up stairs to see about the noise of the basket ball team their first practice. I had my bed turned around in the bedroom & cleaned it like it better

Wednesday January 30
Very cold early every body making a fuss but much warmer later I been running around sent a pattern to Minnie (babies patterns) Leon after logs both teams Myron around with paper to get them to close at six oclock at night I doing very little no snow plow up in P.M. no morning train or freight. The snow plow brought a letter from Grace she getting uneasy I guess with not much hopes of getting home. I wrote to her in evening & got letter ready for morning mail. I let no one see Graces letter she so blue thinks we have forgotten her.

Thursday January 31
dreadful cold to day only repetition of all the days I just eat & sleep & do a few chores Leon drawing logs nearly froze so cold. Gertie went on train & came back with Jimmie Nobles her drove after her. She down a little while I over to Florences a little while Lawson mailed my letter early for morning mail, Grace said she over to Canton last Saturday not going again right off did not go to Minnies don’t know why. Im tired of staying alone this the worst winter I think I ever saw.
