Saturday, January 1
Warmer & stormed some but Leon & Stone & Tom worked on the building laying joice & bridging nearly all joice laid for second floor gave of check of $5.00 yesterday for hangers & had to order more to day going to use ——— At thirty cts. Each Minnie here most of the time Guilses people came back & settled up & got their things Frank Hall paid me two dollars I bought Guilses butter at 32 cts. per lb. & lard at 15 cts per lb. Minnie Gertie Grace all teaching & Florence & going back to Potsdam (Normal School- teachers' college) Mon. the rest have to be to there schools Monday morning I will be alone again expect a woman the middle of next week

Sunday, January 2
Warmer & storming frozen rain Minnie & Grace went on the M train We all went to the Depot with them Gave Minnie cloth for two pair sheets & she took cloth for one pair to make for me. Gertie & Hermie went to the depot & then came back here I had a long nap & Florence got dinner then Gertie Hermie Leon here at night. Harrison here at night till eleven the rest went home early Leon brought over tea & coffee 40 cts worth. High wind to night & snow going thawed a lot to day Stone came Mrs. Getchel coming Thursday Stones best girl I expect going to help xxx I expect.

Monday January 3
Stormy & high wind & snow flying fierce Florence went to Potsdam on the morning train. I done the housework Leon worked on the building & drew sand ——— loads Edd came down & drew sand a couple hours & brought a load from B.P.(Bancroft Place - one of the farms she owned) Stone boy cut bridging & nailed them up & Stone took lumber to Ottyes & got xxx to make bridging to finish Florence took six dollars & xxx away with her. Leon over a while & Gertie for a few minutes Some one tried to wreck the train this morning they think I phoned to the marble quarry to day but did not get any satisfaction.

Tuesday January 4
Paid Tom 50 cts.
Colder very cold in morning but grew warmer during the day High wind at night got papers to set woods out but did not do it for fear Clark could not fix papers right - Leon did not work any Edd brought two loads of sand Stone & boy laid about half of the second floor. got up in the night & worked part of last night Card here in the fore noon went on noon train brick did not come. Eva Spooner came on the morning train & went to Binnies I here alone Am about discouraged so much to do.

Wednesday January 5
Warmer stormed a little most all day but enough to stop work Leon came & worked around eight hours Stone worked all day at laying second floor the boy helped all around & did not go to farm as I would have liked too. Gertie Hermie & Leon here this evening most of the time. Pooler paid me three dollars to January seventh Charlie boy came & paid one dollar for the week. Kelseys paid me five till Feb. second. Edd came & drew three loads of sand Spearance came & hired the back rooms on the left hand side. Gave a check for second keg of eight nails

Thursday January 6
cold wind but clear I went on morning train to Gov. (Governeur) to see about numerous thing see about marble & Bill of Lading & money Mr. Wise came on the morning train & also Mr. Card. Commenced to unload second car of brick Leon Tom & Edd & brought window frames those I paid for. Lawton sent up the other door & window frames to the depot. Stone lost the afternoon to go to meet Mrs. Getchel she came on the night train. Leon staid here & worked. Gertie here when I got home & help get on supper. Water pipe busted in new basement.

Friday January 7
very cold for laying brick but two men laid brick all day. Stone dug holes for the joice. Leon & Tom & Edd drew brick. Got over the girders & window frames & door frames. Got a letter from Florence this morning I wrote her & enclosed two dollars. Leon & Gertie here this evening. Leon called me a damned old liar & thief about a half dozen times mad because I would not mortgage the farm & give the money to him. Gertie hears all she wanted & got up & went home. Gave a check for $30.24 for girders & one to Leon for ten dollars Mrs Getchel helped me about the work all day seem quite amiable.

Saturday January 8
Poolers came here overnight train. Very cold in the morning but warmer at night too cold to lay bricks so the masons went away Stone put timbers in girders & dug holes for the joice & laid some floor where the masons work Leon & the boys finished drawing the brick in second car Mrs. Getchel & I done the work made citron sauce & pies Rented two set of rooms one for two dollars one for $1.50 per week. Had a letter from Florence this morning with another for placards for Williamsons Law Office got $4.50 rent Leon Clark here to get money to buy a new pump for the well down there.

Sunday January 9
very cold water stopped had to take a kettle hot water down cellar & put on the pipes. Mrs. Getchel & Stone went to church this morning had dinner at two then Gertie came down & Leon went to Harrisville so he said.Hermie went hunting to Stammersville John went skating. Tom went to Todds. Mrs. Getchel up to Stones room all the rest of P.M. Leon got back about eight & came here to supper and Gertie & Leon & I eat the rest eat earlier & Stones went to meeting I wrote a letter to Grace then Hermie Gertie came down later & staid a while.

Monday January 10
Tom 1 dollar
Warmer a very high wind last night & snow blew & cold Stone worked at bridging & Tom done chores did not do a very big days work especially Tom Sent Grace a letter this morning Mrs. Getchel washed made some pies & got dinner The masons raised the girder & in the P.M. laid a few brick Tom got another dollar to night. Just got a letter from Florence written last night she had just got back from Minnies had a new dress Minnie got for her blue serge. Leon & Gertie up Frank Hall paid $2.75 on rent.

Tuesday January 11
Stormy & quite cold Gertie & Leon here to night Leon went to see Earl Wants me to Mortgage the farm to get him money. Had a letter from Laidlaw that the marble would not be ready Card here & four bricklayers this P.M. Stone & Mrs. Getchel gone to church I have not amounted to much am about half crazy. Picture show to night. The windows & door frames are set for the second story & brick partly laid I phoned to see about the marble Spearance came with a load of wood & one load of furnature Stone & boy but done xxxx work.

Wednesday January 12
warmer thawing not much done Stone did not work in the P.M. he kicking & finding fault all the time he & Leon had some trouble & he quit Settled up in the evening paid him $23.80 dollar two dollars more than I owed him did not work in the P.M. Tom doing xxxx work Stone & Mrs. Getchel went to church Leon worked in the P.M. a while brick layers not doing any thing much marble did not come Stone did not work in the P.M. settled his board till up to after breakfast to day.

Thursday January 13
Stone started to work new & his board started with supper yesterday. Cold high disagreeable wind the brick layers worked this P.M. I did not do much Leon worked most of the P.M. Here most of the fore noon wanting money I gave him a check for thirty six dollars to meet a check he had given to bank. Nuvine papered the upstairs got one room most done Leon said he would never be arrested if his gun would work. Stone worked on building about nine hours one hour late in the morning. Tom not doing much Stone & Mrs. Getchel went to church & Gertie Hermie John & Leon here to night Leon feeling better to night.

Friday January 14
very cold the coldest yet this year Leon been here part of the day Nuvine papered here Stone worked down in cellar propping up joice To cold to work outside in afternoon he worked upstairs fixing a little partition & door in back kitchen Tom not doing very well got three rooms papered for a man named Jones Leon went to Earls to see about fixing a mortgage to get money. Card here went on noon train Marble & window frames brought over to day. Stones & Getchel gone to church. Gertie here to night & brought mail card from Grace.

Saturday January 15
Gertie Hermie & john & Leon here after show. Sent a letter to Florence with $2.00. Still very cold but a little more moderate I got ready & went to Gov. on morning train Leon staid at home & see to things Stone worked upstairs & the boy did not amount to much I guess Novine worked here commenced about eight & quit at 4-30 I put mortgage on upper farm to help Leon out of his trouble or in other words put myself in trouble to help him out. Had a letter from Minnie & one from Florence Snowing here a little very icy the window frames all here & the marble will be here Tuesday. I bought three bedsteads & quilts went to the picture show at night.

Sunday January 16
Still quite cold but snowing Leon over this morning Stone & Mrs. Getchel went to church Spearance here to day family came yesterday paid his rent last night Hermie& Leon went up with Gertie to supper Gertie had dinner here. Stones & Mrs. Getchel went to church this evening Gertie The masons working on the building are Jack Lee foreman & McBride Jessie McCarter Boss Brick Layer Dell Mclain George Miller

Monday January 17
very cold below zero in the early morning Leon went to Watertown on morning train Laurole Brown to deposit 2.00 dollars at the Bank of Governeur out of the Farm money & gave Leon a check for two hundred. Stone worked up stairs & Tom too. Nuvine worked til 4-5 & finished up there so cold the masons did not try to work Cards foreman here to see about sand

Tuesday January 18
Edd here to dinner Still very cold early this morning heard them say five below zero but this P.M. 12 above the masons laying brick finished the back end ready for third floor & they ordered the men to take the cornace of Arbas building out of their way. Noice went up & ordered them off. I cleaned Poolers room some & the folks came from Potsdam into the front rooms upstairs Paid me $2 Charlie boy came & paid me $2.00 Florence walked in at train time came home sick with hard cold got a letter from Minnie to night Stone worked up in the end rooms towards Browns at cupboard.

Wednesday January 19
Woodward 6 dollar check. Yet very cold the masons did not go to work very early set the window sills & finished up the back to the third story & Leon & Stone Edd & Tom put the joice up for the third floor Stone also worked at the cupboard in the further rooms upstairs. Gertie & Maud Spearance up here to night also Harrison Leon & Woodward & he paid me six dollar check & Pooler paid me $4.50 rent to Jan 28th. Stones went to church. He told Leon they were going to be married soon. Wanted to hire a room for her. Florence not very hard up Sat up half the night then try to lie in bed half the day.

Thursday January 20
Not quite so cold but stormed & wind blew so bad the brick layers could not work. Stone worked in the cellar at the front door did not amount to much door does not fit Stones gone to church not married yet I guess Florence gone with Gertie to the movies sent a letter to Wise to come see about the fronts & to Sadel for furniture $7.20 got to get roofing paper & told Florence not to go to the movies but she went will make it interesting the rest of the time. The water froze up in the further cellar so they could not get any water to make mortar.

Friday January 21
nice warm day the masons worked all day on the fronts of the second floor Leon & Stone laid some of the third floor & bridged joice Stone got mad & didn't go to work until nine oclock. Miss Getchel did not amount to much Tom done fairly well. I gave tom 75 cts sent eight dollars for roofing to Charles xxxx . Gertie Hermie & John up a while Harrison here this evening Stones gone to church or somewhere. Sent a letter to see about the windows Myron sent me up a check for Jan. rent on the store. Leon fixed Woods roof.

Saturday January 22
Nice & warm like summer early but grew a little colder at night I around everywhere Mrs. Getchel mopped the first time. Florence did not do much I went to the third entertainment on my ticket Harrison here & staid till one oclock Old Stone & Mrs. Getchel sit up till near midnight. Stone worked about eight hours Tom running the roads had a mess of kids over here I kicked the Whitmarsh kid down Tom here to supper Leon around & worked some. Stone laid part of the third floor Florence up till midnight last night Gave Tom another dollar The masons finished the wall to the third story

Sunday January 23
colder but clear Florence went on the ten oclock train back to Potsdam was going to stop & stay with Grace at the junction till the seven oclock. Leon over a couple of times this A.M. we went on the roof to see the third floor on the new part & up on the second floor. The ground as bare as April usualy just a little ice & now & then a patch of old snow in side hills or hollows. Mrs. Spearance paid me the weeks rent $1.50 Mrs. Hall paid two dollars. Florence got herself a pair of rubbers Went away mad because she could not have all the money I had said she had only what I gave her when I knew better.

Monday January 24
A nice warm day & pleasant and ideal day to lay brick working on the third story set door & window frames & sills in the back & set a frame in the back between two stores. Erb Webb wiring the rooms Kelsey in Leon looking after everything in general trying to have things go right. Tom running around doing nothing I gave him a check of five dollars Stone working at a number of things where needed I have been watching them to day. Sent to have three hundred dollars placed to my credit at the Bank of Governeur & gave Leon a check for $125 on the Gov. bank.

Tuesday January 25
Gave Tom a check for five dollars. Another nice warm day like summer thermometer . The brick layers laid off for brick did not do anything here. Stone worked laying third floor. Tom staid with Edd last night but helped some this P.M. my bedsteads & comfortables came over to day. Gertie & Mrs. Beach drove to Gouv. To day Hermie & Gertie up to night & Leon too Kelsey had the electric lights put in & turned on to day. Leon did not do much here to day. Edd got sand Card came up & went back on the freight. The brick gone to Norwood again gave him a check for xxxx. Bill to Maybee $25 to MacDonald for flooring 21 dollars.

Wednesday January 26
Another nice day as warm as summer people running around without an wraps. Old Stone not working this forenoon but a little this P.M. Leon away all day most don't know what for. Went to Earls to get paper made out mortgages on stuff & Leons house & Lot I sent Tom away & told him to stay away. Had a card from Minnie that Florence sent from Potsdam. Gertie not been here to day let the little snipe stay away. The brick men lowered the back windows & sent the frames over. Several people want rooms. Mrs. Hall paid two dollars on rent leaving now $4.05 due.

Thursday January 27
warm & nice but looked like storm some. I bothered to death about the third story windows not right for the front Leon not doing much on building fooling around with shavings. He went to and . Leon went up to Earls to sign the papers which he made out on his house & stock did not get much done on building Stone did not do much took down some of the old wall in the P.M.. Leon & Morris & Edd drew brick & shavings. Mrs. Jones paid me two dollars their weeks rent making $7 paid in all.

Friday January 28
Leon & Edd & Sammy Morris drawing brick. Colder Commenced to freeze towards night & is going to freeze quite hard I think hasn't froze since before last Friday to amount to anything a little colder Sunday & froze a little Sat. night The brick layers working on the third story. Leon & Old Stone had a row & Stone & Mrs. Getchel went to Woods we settled & paid him $14 gave Tom a check yesterday of $6.25 paid in full. Gertie came down this morning & I gave her the money & she got brown cloth & been making me a dress to day. Old Mrs. Burnett buried to day supposed to be 107 years old.

Saturday January 29
still colder the masons laying brick & the mortar freezing. Grace came last night we are here alone she washed out a few things for herself Leon Edd & Sammy Morris unloading brick. The masons on the last story but going rather slow Gertie down but did not do anything on my dress. Leon Grace & Gertie went to the picture show at night I staid at home but they came back & stopped a while after the show. Mr. Spearance paid me one & a half dollars on rent to night.

Sunday January 30
quite cold did not get up little after eight. Hermie & Leon here this morning the boys going with their skirts & I hear there is a catholic church going to be built on Jim O'sheas lot here. Rather a lonesome day Gertie did not come till late Leon went off to the farm Grace went to bed awhile we read some then Gertie & Grace went over to Leons thought he was sick felt bad last night. Hermie went to Stammerville hunting Warmer at night went to bed early but did not go to sleep until late.

Monday January 31
Warmer & raining every little while the masons laid brick most of the time I over there occasionaly but did not do much Edd here a while to work Sam Morris finished unloading car of brick the third car load. Looking for a letter from Florence but did not get it Grace went on the morning train to DeKalb Harrison came on the M. train from Canton & Potsdam probably. Weather just like spring day warm I had the mortgage recorded on Leons personal property & gave him another check for $75. He gave me a check for $35 for a thirty six dollar check I gave him a while ago for lumber.
