April 1916

Saturday April 1
Cloudy not quite so nice but thawing. & rained a little toward night. Guiles worked & Newvine & Bennet & Parron & Leon. Bennet went home. Told him we could not get along without him & paid him nine dollars, three dollars to much. Gave Otty Clealand check for 13.99 I think. That too much too. Get P. plaster board most half overhead & on the side. Got a summons from Canton for some of Leon's trades. Stone put some things in room to night. Groceries hired rooms but did not pay rent.

Sunday April 2
A little colder & storming a little but thawing later. Grace got ready & went on morning train. She feeling fine. I here alone only when Leon here. He here to dinner. Gertie, Hermie, & John gone to Stammerville to tap trees for John. She wanting to make sugar next week. I let Stone put up bed & put things in so they could stay here to night. Rented to him yesterday. Leon got a lame horse, doctoring it to night. Lees in a fuss, sleighing all done, the snow pretty well gone, only in drifts & in hollows. Haven't been out to day. Gertie gone.

Monday April 3
Colder, froze quite hard but warmed up to day. Sap run quite well I think. I had a letter or card from Flor to night. Guiles, Leon, Parron working on the P. plaster board most on. Newvine painting. Got the front all done. Payday at the mines. Pooler paid me 4.50. Jones paid 4.00. Stone paid me 4.35 two weeks' rent & one month's water rent. Stone paid his rent for two weeks four dollars & water rent for a month. Kelsey offered his rent but did not take it.

Tuesday April 4
Cloudy & stormy & snowed & turned to rain. I not doing a great deal only seeing to things. Wrote a card to Florence this morning. Went to Bancroft place to see about Kelsey's papers. Served a three-day notice on Kelsey. They dreadfull mad. Parron set studding nearly halfway through on the second floor. Did not do much. Gertie did not come down. John up with the mail. I down in drugstore quite a few minutes to night. Mrs. Kerr in there. Arba over to town hall. Leon went over home since chores. Rented Burt Guiles the rooms next to Browns. Finished painting on plaster board.

Wednesday April 5
Quite a cold day. I went on the morning train to Gouverneur. Had lots of errands to do. Ordered water pipe for new store & bought wallpaper & ordered transoms for stores. Burt Guiles people moved into the rooms up stairs while I gone. I settled with the bank & got my statement.

Thursday April 6
Not very cold. The ground wet & roads very very muddy. I had a suit or was to have at Canton with Leon but Oss Noice said not to go. They with drew the suit & subpeonaid me. The men worked in store, I think. I went up the steps to the third floor for the first time.

Friday April 7
Parron & Guiles working at the second floor partitions. I did not do much but just my chores. Expected Grace but but when the train came who should come but Ray & Minnie. Leon was over & Gertie & Hermie up a while. Minnie brought a satchel full of eatables.

Saturday April 8
Wet & thawing. Not very cold. Minnie & Ray here. Grace came on morning train for her vacation. I had a lawsuit with Aldves. I adjourned it till next Friday. The girls cleaned up & then at dinner time Ray & Minnie went up to Gerties for dinner. Grace & I took dinner together. Guiles & Parron worked on the second floor setting P. partitions & boarding them up & putting in door frames & hanging doors. Leon around occasionally but not working any to speak of. Paid xxx Parron & Guiles up to to night. Grace not feeling well.

Friday April 14
A cold stormy day. Minnie & Ray went on the morning train. Ray walked home & said he nearly froze so he left Minnie there over night. She went home with Eula. Minnie wrote that Ray & Nett (Probably Nettie Manchester wife of Charles Lewis Grandy, mother of Floyd & Ray ) was back to Canton & she expected Florence over there on the train. They both to stay over night at Canton.

Saturday April 15
A beautifull day. A sap day & calf day. & syrup coming in some. Leon been here all day tending Burt Bloss to plaster. Finished the rooms up on the second floor, all but the hall. Parron worked on 2nd floor. Put in one door & a number of things. Grace & I took supper at Guileses then Gertie came down & went over to the new building then came home & Grace & Gertie went to picture show. Stone paid me four $ on rent to April 29. Bloss quit at four oclock. I paid him three $. Got a letter from Minnie to night with a note filled out to sign on St. Lawrence County Bank to get one Hundred $.

Sunday April 16
A very beautifull day. Warm like summer. Gertie came down without any thing on her head or around her. Grace went to DeKalb on the morning train. Leon over & Hermie up before she went. I went to train & went to walk with Gertie. Wrote a letter to Minnie & one to Florence. Sent a note to Minnie to sign on the St. Law Co Bank for 100 $ dated April 15. Gertie & Hermie up to night a little while. I went & told Mr. Guiles I wanted him to work tomorrow. Sent a check to Florence in her letter for three $.

Monday April 17
A nice day. Warm & nice. The frogs out singing yesterday. Guiles worked & Parron. Guiles put in some steps in the back hall & worked putting up ceiling on second floor. Bloss plastered up on third floor. Bloss bought 14 sack plaster Saturday & we'll have to get more tomorrow. Gertie & Leon up to night. I set up till near eleven. I cleaned up. Sent a letter to Florence with a three dollar check in it.

Tuesday April 18
Cold & disagreeable. Stormed some. I have not done much work. Guiles worked till five oclock then went after his pay to mines. Parron worked till ten oclock then got mad, went home. Quit. Leon worked all day & Bloss plastered most. Finished the third floor. Leon tired of it. Bloss got ½ ton more mortar to Woodcocks. Gave him a ten dollar check 7$ for mortar & three for himself. Parron came down at.

Friday April 21
Rained in the morning a little. I got up & went to Gouverneur. Went to Lawton & the Loan office & Bank & got a couple of transoms at Lawtons & got the chair fixtures & Gave him a check on Canton bank & went up to Mazzas & staid a while. Went to see Parker & got a copy of a lease. Got some notices to put Kelsey out. Grace came from DeKalb on the four oclock & came home with me. Gertie up at night. Florence here & Harrison here until all hours.

Sunday April 23
Cold & wet & disagreeable weather. Grace feeling pretty well to day. Went up to Gerties & went to walk to the bridge. I staid at home all day. Gertie, Hermie, & John & Leon here part of the time. The boys started the Automobile & ran around through the mud a while then put it up. Grace & Flor rode a little while. The hens laying pretty well. Would like to have went to the farm but the roads to muddy. The block pretty quiet. Kelsey & Joneses & number of others gone for a wander. Harrison not up. We got to bed in fair season. 8 years ago to day Pa died.

Monday April 24
Pleasant but cloudy part of the time. Grace went back to the Junction on the morning train, not feeling extra well. Florence got hard cold. Obrien came on morning train to see about the child in back room. Loveless came on train after taxes xx on automobile. I paid him a check of $8.84 cts. A woman came here this p.m. looking for Pooler. Said she was his wife. Livery man from Gouverneur brought her but Pooler not here. Went away Saturday night. She went to the Depot & waited til the night train then they came over together. He came. Harrison came up at night.

Tuesday April 25
A nice fore noon but colder & raining a little this p.m. Leon working to day but did nothing for me yesterday. He bringing over shelving from Bartletts to new store. Wise coming tomorrow I expect. Green selling Potatoes in town for a dollar. Guiles working commenced to lay floor second floor & they putting up shelving. I did not do much, mopped the bed room over in new building. Got a letter from Minnie, one from Lawton, & one from Brigam Web quite agreeably surprised to get a check of 16$ for use of bucketts & trees.

Wednesday April 26
Lowry but not cold. I did not amount to much. Leon worked up in finishing putting up shelving & laying floor. Guiles worked. Florence worked on her Thesis in p.m. & washed in fore noon. Mrs. Lee helped her some. I got the bill of lading from the bank for glass to fill the transoms. Deposited the check I got from Brigam Web last night. Wise & Mazza up to day in a great hurry to get the store. Wanted to get the lease made out but could not get it.

Thursday April 27
Lowry. Raining some of the time. Florence writing some of the time & worked quite a lot. I supoened to proceedings against Johnson & woman he had been living with up stairs. Clark took them to Canton to night. Another man came to rent rooms to night. Had words with Gertie Beach about coming up stairs again. Leon, Gertie & Hermie all went to the Picture show. Harrison here to night. Florence been out all evening. We went up to Earl's to see about lease but not done. Pooler got a woman with him. Says she is his wife but don't believe it.

Friday April 28
Lowry & rained a little in fore noon. I went to Gouverneur on morning train. I went to the Loan Office & to Sadels & to Mazzas & to printing office to get leases printed. & tried to get money on note at Bank. Clark up at night after I got back. Harrison here & staid till late. Gertie up a while. The Sisters from the Catholic home at Ogdensburg came on the train & brought one of Edd Merrit's children dead & two little ones alive to the funeral. Went to Pitcairn with them. The child about two years old I think. Bought shelving & chairs at Sadels & bargained for more later.

Saturday April 29
Got a subpoena to go to Canton in Johnson's case. Had a suit will merit but he did not appear. Lowry & cool. We trying to get the store ready for Wise. Pete Guiles working. Leon working a little of the time. We cleaned the counters & Leon oiled the floor. Guiles fixed in the transom or glass for transoms. Aunt Sarah Gibbs & staid part of the p.m. Had not seen her in ten years I guess. Had quite a visit. Got a letter from Uncle John last night. They well. Wanted Leon to send them some maple syrup. Gertie, Hermie & Leon up after the picture show & Harrison here till midnight. Paid Guiles five dollars. Send dues to Loan Office.

Sunday April 30
Cool & Lowry. I staid in all day. Florence here most of the time. She went out a little while up to Gretchen's & Vivian's. I think she went to ride with Harrison. Mrs. Lee gave us our dinner & supper all cooked. Leon here part of the time. He & Hermie, Gertie & Leah went to the farm & got leeks & cooked them up on the creek & ate them. We worked some on Florence's green silk dress & she wore it away. Stone gave up the rooms & gave me the key. Last day of the month, a nice day. Roads getting pretty good. I guess Florence to go tomorrow.
