THE FABLE

Giraffe, elephant, monkey and all the other animals knew that Lion was king of the jungle. As was his habit, Lion took a nap every afternoon. All the animals kept as quiet as they could be so as not to wake Lion. One afternoon, Mouse ran over the Lion's paw. Mouse said, "Please, don't hurt me. Maybe one day I may be able to help you." Lion was amused by this and laughed and laughed until he could laugh no more. So he said to Mouse, "I will let you go because you make me laugh." Mouse was glad to be free and scooted back to his cozy hole in the jungle. A few days later, Lion was caught in a net set by hunters. His loud roars did not help him. Most of the other animals were afraid to come near Lion. Mouse heard Lion's roars and scampered to where he was trapped. His tiny sharp teeth soon loosened the ropes that held Lion. Lion was able to escape. Lion said to Mouse, "Thank you. I never thought that a tiny mouse could ever help a strong lion."
