The word Pangaea
means “all land” in Greek. Nobody believed in the Pangaea theory because the
person that thought it, Alfred Wegener, couldn’t prove it until later. Fossils
were evidence that supported the Pangaea theory. They found fossils of a
dinosaur in different parts of the world.
Another piece of evidence that supported the Pangaea theory was climate
clues. They found warm weather plant fossils in cold places. They also found
glacial deposits and grooved bedrock in warm weather countries like Africa and
India. Rocks of the same type are found on different parts of the world. Parts of the Appalachian Mountains are
similar to others found in Greenland and Western Europe.
The continents
were joined together about 250 million years ago. At about 200 million years
ago is when the super continent, Pangaea, started breaking up.
About 800 million years ago the super continent did not exist. To help you understand the clip above read the following.
