A view of the mountains from one of the local vineyards
SEQUALS is a charming village in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region which is in the North East corner of Italy. It is situated at the foot of the Dolomites and falls within the Valley of Magredi and an area of outstanding natural beauty which is as yet undiscovered. It is the original home of mosaics and the birthplace of Primo Carnera, boxing champion of the World in 1934. To the north of Sequals there are mountains with PianCavallo being the closest skiing resort (approximately one hours drive away). Slightly further West is Cortina the well known exclusive ski resort. To the south of Sequals lie the Venetian plains and approximately one hours drive Venice and the Venetian Riviera. Lido di Jesolo, Lignano, Bibione, Caorle and Grado being the local beach resorts. Austria and Slovenia are easily accessed within the hour.
Within the local area there are hundreds of walks both for the experienced and novice walker. Other local activities are mountain biking and canoeing and water rafting at Claut, sailing in Barcis, horse riding in Tramonti di Sotto, Vito DAsio and Vivaro, rock climbing in Vito DAsio, archery at Vito DAsio, hand gliding at Toppo, caves in Pradis, fishing in nearby coves and golfing in Aviano and Fagagna.
Sequals is a thriving village of just under 1000 inhabitants. It has three churches. Al Belvedere is the local hotel/restaurant/bar. Other bars are Al Cret, Il Forno, Il Bottegon, Abruzzese, the last three also being restaurants, there is also a Pizzeria. In Sequals there is a cashpoint, a Post Office, a butcher, a chemist, a hairdresser, a tobacconist, a clothes shop, a bakery, a pet grooming shop, a garden center and a gym. A fruit and vegetable van comes to the village twice a week, a dry cleaning van also comes weekly and there is a small weekly market on Friday mornings where you can buy fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, cheeses, flowers, clothes and shoes. There are two doctor surgeries and a dentist.
9 kilometers away are the towns of Spilimbergo and Maniago. Spilimbergo has approximately 8,000-10,000 inhabitants and is the national center of mosaics. The town has a market on a Saturday, a swimming pool, a bowling club, a cinema, dozens of bars, boutiques, shops, supermarkets, banks etc. Maniago is slightly smaller and is internationally renowned for the craftsmanship of knives. Maniago has a local market on Mondays. There are hospitals in both Spilimbergo and Maniago. The nearest cities are Udine and Pordenone both 40 minutes drive away.
The village of San Daniele which is 15 minutes drive from Sequals is where the famous San Daniele ham comes from, much favoured by celebrity chefs in preference to the more commonly known Parma ham. The grapes for producing Pinot Grigio wine are grown in the neighbouring Collio area and other wines from the area include Tocai, Merlot and Cabernet to name but a few.
Both Ryanair and Easyjet offer low cost flights from Stansted and many regional airports in the UK to Venice, Treviso and Trieste, all easily accessible by public transport within one hour.

On his retirement to Italy a few years ago he was unable to resist the urge to renovate this derelict but beautiful building.
