That Which Keeps Me Grounded
I am a wife, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a colleague, but often I see myself foremost as a teacher; an educator who is there for students, the parents, my colleagues, and the system. I work hard, I study hard, and I play hard. I am very conscientious and I have high expectations for myself, and my students. Teaching is rewarding and it's fun. It is also a very demanding profession and sometimes I just need a rest. At those times I opt for time in my garden, or a walk with the dog, or a stroll along a beach, or just hanging out with the 'fam'. My family and friends keeps me grounded and are quick to remind me that sometimes I take what I'm doing just a little too seriously!
More than just grounding me though, my family is also my source of inspiration, my confidantes, and also serve as a good sounding board when there are ideas I want to try out. My husband and children, and even my friends, allow me to brainstorm and share in a comfortable environment and then are honest and up front about what they think. Just like children I need to be able to use language to come to grips with my experiences and to put things into perspective.
As I think about all of the world issues that I believe are important for people to be aware of, like racism, peace, war, homelessness, abuse, and poverty, I also remember how lucky I am to have my family close by and to be able to enjoy the peacefulness of a sunset, the beauty of a flower, and the freedom to live and speak the way I want.
