The innovation of putting ink on paper started long ago in the Stone Age. The cavemen covered their cave walls with illustration. The cavemen used charcoal from their fire pit and that was the early form of ink. Paper did not come about until 3,000 BC in Egypt . Paper is derived from the Egyptian word Cyperous Papyrus.

Today, we use manufactured paper of all types and sizes from the common 8 ½ by 11 to billboard size. We have many types of ink ranging from simple extracts of colors of plants to chemically engineered ink pigments.

Still in use today are the pencil and the pen. As old as these inventions are, they will never seem to go away. The pencil is made of graphite, a form of carbon. The carbon in the pencil is not very different from the carbon in the caveman's charcoal writing utensils.

The typewriter did not appear until 1873. It is a very helpful tool. The letters and numbers are preformed so that the document is uniformed. Not everyone has the same handwriting and the pen was generating inconsistent results. The typewriter somewhat solves these problems. It is also the beginning of printers.

Above are links formatted as a timeline that will lead you through the invention of these unique well known printers.
