Conflict in the Darfur region of western Sudan has caused millions of people to flee their homes. Some 200,000 are estimated by the United Nations to have died as a result of the violence. Trócaire is working with Caritas International and Action of Churches Together to target 500,000 Internally Displaced People (IDPs) under its Emergency Response Programme in Darfur.
Trócaire is working in the Middle East to ensure that civilians are protected, human rights are respected and international law is upheld. Trócaire raises public awareness in Ireland of poverty and injustice. It analyses the causes of poverty and mobilises the Irish public to campaign to bring about global change. This action is undertaken in a bid to improve the lives of the world’s poorest and most oppressed citizens in line with the principles of social justice.
Two years after the earthquake in the Indian Ocean that caused the devastating tsunami in 2004, Trócaire is working to ensure that its response to the tsunami also supports longer-term needs and development issues throughout the region. In Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand, and the various other countries affected by the giant wave, the long process of rebuilding communities is progressing despite numerous challenges.
