Huntsville Garden Club
Huntsville Garden Club was organized in the summer of 1933. The objectives of the club were to cleanup and beautify Huntsville. Mrs. T.P. Mitchell served as the first President. Ever enthusiastic, she laid the foundation for garden club work and in return she won the cooperation, admiration and respect of the entire town.
The stated purpose of the club is to stimulate the knowledge and satisfaction of gardening among its members; to encourage civic planning and beautification; responsible recycling, and to cooperate with local, state and national organizations in conservation and other worthwhile projects.
The club met continously until 1941, and then disbanded during the years of World War II. In 1944 the club was recognized and Mrs. Grace Longino-Cox served as president. In 1950 & 1951, under the leadership of Mrs. L.E. Bush, the club’s membership grew to 73, the first yearbook was printed, and the garden club became affiliated with the National Council of State Garden Clubs.
Through the Garden Club’s long and active history there have been many capable and talented presidents. Six past presidents remain a part of the current membership: Mrs. Lillie Mae Hayman- 1965-1966, 1979-1980, and 1990-1991. Mrs. Gerry Embrey- 1981-1982 Mrs. Gloria Graves- 1988-1989 Mrs. Betty Sears- 1983-1984 and 1989-1990 Mrs. Sue Harris- 2001-2003 Mrs. Nan O’Leary- 2003-2005 The Huntsville Garden Club continues to create beauty within the community through its participation in the tree planting of Arbor Day and at the site of the future HEARTS Veterans Museum. The Memorial Rose garden and shrubs and perennials at the Wynne Home, Memorial Roses at the Gibbs-Powell Home, Wildflowers planted within the city; and seasonal wreaths for Huntsville Health Care Center. The annual Herb Festival brings excitement each year come rain or shine. In 2002 the Cabin On The Square became an on-going project for interested members.
It is the goal of the Huntsville Garden Club to remain visible within the community through its effort to create beauty in all that it undertakes. It remains the obligation of our members to follow the lead of those who came before us.
