The Injustice Society of the World
Vandal Savage claimed to be over a million years old, although his arch-enemy places his age at approximately 50,000 years, when Savage was the chieftain of a tribe of Cro-Magnon. While leading a hunting party, Vandar Adg met a man who was his mortal enemy a fight seemed imminent, but at that moment a mysterious fireball hurtled from the sky and burst into fiery gas over the chief's head. Vandar Adg collapsed, and lay in a deep sleep, seemingly neither dead nor alive. At last he recovered, but some time later he realized how he had changed -- while others grew old, he did not.
As he lived through the ages, Vandar Adg is said to have been a king in ancient Sumer (his long life perhaps giving them the tradition of kings who lived tens of thousands of years). He also claimed to have been Cheops (the Greek form of the Egyptian Khufu), builder of the great pyramid; Gaius Julius Caesar, the Roman conqueror; and Genghis Khan, leader of the Mongol hordes. Then, deciding there was too much danger in prominence since he could still be accidentally killed, he became an advisor to others and aided William the Conqueror in his invasion of England.
As Almirante Vandalo Salvaje, he led the Spanish Armada to defeat against Drake and the English. As Marshal Sauvage, the advised Napoleon Bonaparte, leading not only to many victories but also the disastrous Russian campaign and his final defeat at Waterloo. He assisted Bismarck in the creation of the Second Reich, and victory in the Franco-Prussian War; then, ultimately, to Bismarck's downfall.
By the 1940s, Savage was bored. Only the "chess game of power" amused him, and, as it seemed easier to get that power in a totalitarian regime, he determined to bring about victory for the Axis.
He convinced U.S. leaders to appoint him War Labor Chief of the country -- but in order to be sworn in, he needed a birth certificate. He stole Doiby Dickles', bringing him into conflict with Green Lantern. He threatened to reveal GL's secret identity if the Emerald Gladiator interfered, but GL felt it would be worth that price -- to see Savage given life imprisonment.
This prospect was too much for an immortal man. Savage fled to his secret headquarters in Mammoth Cave, where GL and Doiby followed. He was about to shoot them when GL's power ring cut the rock out from under him and sent him plummeting to apparent death.
But Savage survived, and joined the Injustice Society of the World and captured Hawkman, only to be beaten by the Justice Society, after which he spent 16 years in prison.
He emerged vowing revenge on the JSA, but was foiled by the first two Flashes. Later he found he had started to age. Finding the ancient fireball had not exploded, but vanished into limbo, he used the Flashes' speed to retrieve it, only to have it apparently destroy him.
He has reappeared and attempted to conquer the Earth by changing the past, but was stopped by Superman. A subsequent plot to grab power was foiled by Superman and the Forgotten Heroes, led by Immortal Man. He escaped, however, and his present whereabouts are unknown.
