Background:
Kal-Hel was an evil scientific mastermind on the planet Krypton. From his lair on Krypton's moon, he invented a shrinking ray for the purpose of taking Kryptonian cities and holding them hostage. His first target was the capital city of Kandor. Kal-Hel sealed the city in a bottle and made his demands. The Kryptonian authorities burst into his lunar lair just as he was shrinking his second metropolis, Argo City. Kal-Hel used various technological weapons to defend himself, but was eventually taken into custody. During the struggle, the shrinking ray machine overloaded and bombarded Argo City with exotic radiation before exploding and destroying the moon. The disaster killed 90% of the Argo City's population; but the survivors were not exactly lucky. They were shrunk into another bottle, with no civic infrastructure, and sitting on a chunk of Kryptonite that used to be part of Argo City's bedrock. Less than 1% of them survived the radiation before it was discovered that lead sheets would block it. The rest of the moon was converted into Kryptonite and either showered the surface of Krypton or scattered into space.

As punishment for his crimes, Kal-Hel was forced to undergo a mind-wipe procedure, which removed all of his scientific knowledge and refined talents, and implanted a disdain for most higher thoughts and those who indulged in them. Thus crippled, he was then shot into space in a sealed capsule.

After months of flight, the space capsule encountered a space warp, and was transported fairly close to Earth's Solar System. Many tons of small Kryptonite stones had also fallen through, and were scattered in the near astral vicinity. Kal-Hel discovered that he got stronger the closer he came to Earth's yellow sun; he was soon able to escape the capsule and make it to Earth. His astounding strength and other powers made him a force to be reckoned with in the American underworld. It was not long before he received his first exposure to Kryptonite, which gave him the power of Ultra-invisibility for two days. After several more exposures to the mineral, he deduced the cause of his unpredictable powers. He now actively searches for the rocks, but is wary of eventually running out of unique samples.
