Background:
For generations, every member of the Jesse family have been leading aerialists. James Jesse's father headed the Flying Jesses, which performed in circuses, but young James was secretly afraid of walking on the high wire, and avoided practicing. Instead, he continually read about "namesake," the outlaw Jesse James.

To help him overcome his fear, James created a pair of "jet-shoes," which could support his weight in the air by firing invisible jets of compressed air. No one else knew that the shoes helped James perform the incredible aerial stunts for which he soon became famous.

Longing for a new challenge, James Jesse decided to turn to crime in imitation of Jesse James, but instead of holding up stagecoaches as that outlaw did, James Jesse used his jet-shoes to rob airplanes in flight. As a criminal, James Jesse wore a harlequin-like costume and called himself the Trickster, but the second Flash discovered the Trickster's true identity and captured him.

The Trickster continued his criminal career in Central City for years, but was repeatedly thwarted and captured by the Flash. In committing his crimes, the Trickster used various harmless-seeming toys and gadgets, which he had turned into dangerous weapons. The Trickster prided himself on not being a "mean man," as he put it, although he was intent on killing the Flash, and he was noted for his impish sense of humor and taste for pranks.
