Spending his internship in African Zambia, Dr. Lancaster Hill became fascinated by the strength and senses of animals. Extracting blood from a captive tiger, he isolated the chromosome which makes cats so powerful and injected himself with it. When the tiger escaped, Hill was able to protect the village by killing it bare-handed and realized that he had acquired the animal's might, senses, and agility. A thankful native, Chief Jnuka, made Hill a ceremonial "robe" from the animal's skin and presented it to the doctor before he returned to New York. Just before he took up his residency at Harlem Hospital, Hill's sister Anna was killed by robbers. Confident that the "system" would never punish the murderers, he donned the animal skin, found and killed them, and thereafter stalked the streets as Tiger-Man.
