Will Harper once risked his life to save a Sioux Indian named Brave Bow from a forest fire. Harper was later killed in an avalanche, orphaning his infant son Roy. In gratitude to Harper, Brave Bow became Roy's guardian. Brave Bow was a renowned archer, and taught Roy archery until the boy became a finer archer than Brave Bow himself.
Brave Bow, believing he would soon die, wanted Roy to find a new guardian. Roy wanted to become the assistant to the Green Arrow, the crimefighting archer, and at the Greenville Fair Roy asked Green Arrow if he could become his assistant. The youth's demonstration of his archery skills failed because, unknown to them, Roy's arrows had accidentally become magnetized, causing them to go off course. Roy did win several track competitions at the fair. Later, Roy aided Green Arrow in apprehending some fleeing criminals by firing an arrow that punctured a tire of their car. Impressed, Green Arrow made Roy his partner, calling him "Speedy" because Roy was "as quick with the bow as on a track." Roy became the ward of Oliver Queen -- Green Arrow in his secret identity.
Green Arrow and Speedy worked together for years, during which Speedy joined the Teen Titans. When Green Arrow left to travel about the country with Black Canary and Green Lantern, Roy felt abandoned and, seeking solace through drugs, became a heroin addict. With the help of Black Canary and Green Lantern, Roy overcame his addiction.
Since then Roy has resumed his super-hero career, and has especially devoted himself to capturing criminals dealing in drugs. Speedy has reconciled with Green Arrow, although they now work separately.
