Sam Scudder was a seemingly ordinary convict sent to prison for robbery. Working in a small mirror factory while there, Scudder apparently put the wrong chemical in the silvering of a mirror he was working on. The foreman, Tyler, told Scudder that the mirror was ruined and ordered him to throw it out. But then Scudder looked in the mirror and saw Tyler's face. Scudder realized that the mirror could somehow retain an image for a number of minutes. Scudder studied the mirror and, over the years after being released from prison, devised mirrors that could create incredible effects.
Creating the costumed identity of the Mirror Master for himself, Scudder began using his mirror discoveries for crime. He perfected the image-capturing mirror and used it to create life-size three-dimensional mirror images of people to commit robberies for him. Investigating these crimes, the second Flash first met and captured the Mirror Master.
In the succeeding years the Mirror Master repeatedly escaped prison and committed new spectacular crimes using his extraordinary mirror discoveries. He became one of the Flash's most formidable and persistent foes. It was the Mirror Master who was responsible for first pitting more than two of the members of Flash's rogues' gallery of costumed enemies against him at once. However, when the Flash and the Mirror Master last met, they acted as allies against their mutual adversary, Abra Kadabra.
