Background:
To impress Rita Farr, Steve Dayton directed his experiments and research in psychology and psionics toward the development of the Mento helmet, which harnesses and directs the latent psychokinetic powers of the human brain, giving the wearer various mental powers. Dayton began his campaign to convince Rita to marry him by playing super-hero, hoping that she would notice and approve. Calling himself Mento, he joined the Doom Patrol in their adventures but never became an official member. He finally succeeded in convincing Rita to marry him, but he couldn't convince her to give up the Doom Patrol and her identity as Elasti-Girl, a decision which led to her death along with the other members of the Doom Patrol at the hands of General Zahl and Madame Rouge of the Brotherhood of Evil.

Dayton turned bitter, and left on a quest to find and destroy his wife's murderers. After Dayton had been missing for some time, Garfield Logan, Steve and Rita's adopted son, called in Robotman, the only surviving Doom Patrol member, to help search for Dayton. They discovered him in Zandia, where he was being held captive by General Zahl and Madame Rouge, along with he rest of the Brotherhood of Evil. Dayton was heavily drugged and forced to used his Mento helmet for them. Robotman, Changeling, and the rest of the Teen Titans rescued Dayton. Madame Rouge and General Zahl were killed in the process, fulfilling Dayton's vow.

Dayton returned to New York and the running of Dayton Industries, where the development of Promethium, a self-renewing energy source, was taking place. Samples of Promethium were stolen by the Terminator but were recovered with the help of the Titans. Promethium was also used for the creation of special super-powered agents, an experiment which ended in tragedy when the Replicants chose death in an explosion over life in a world where they felt alien and inferior.

Recently, Dayton discovered he had terminal cancer, and began using his Mento helmet to try to bring the cancer under control, a treatment that has driven him insane. He has gone undercover as a criminal, and now believes himself to be haunted by the Doom Patrol, who blame him for their deaths. Mento is also conducting illegal experiments on human subjects, using Promethium to change them into new beings. he is currently be hunted by Changeling and Cyborg of the New Teen Titans.
