Billy (Captain Marvel) and Mary Batson are twins. When their parents died, their nurse, Sarah Primm, who was also a nurse for the wealthy Bromfields, clandestinely substituted Mary for the dead baby daughter of the Bromfields. Sending for Billy, Sarah gave him half a locket; his sister, who was ignorant of her true birth, owned the other half. Years later, when Mary Bromfield appeared on a radio show hosted by Billy, he noticed that she was wearing a broken locket, but he didn't remember the connection until after she had left. Chasing her as Captain Marvel, he prevented her from being kidnapped, became Billy, told her his secret identity, and also told her who she really was. When the kidnappers recovered and gagged Billy, Mary desperately uttered "Shazam," the magic word which changes Billy into Captain Marvel, and became a super-powered girl. After she subdued the felons, she and the mystified Billy flew to see the old wizard who gave Billy his powers. He explained that the magic word works for Mary because, "though she is a girl," there are female counterparts to the gods and demigods from whom Captain Marvel derives his strength. In her case, Mary gets grace from Selena, strength from Hippolyta, skill from Ariadne, fleetness from Zephyrus, beauty from Aurora, and wisdom from Minerva. Repeating the word turns Mary Marvel back into plain old Mary.
