The Freedom Fighters are a team of super-heroes originally organized by a mysterious figure
called Uncle Sam to help battle the Axis powers on Earth-X, a parallel world with no native
In the summer of 1941, Uncle Sam discovered he could mentally create an interdimensional vortex through which he could travel to Earth-X. Learning that the warring Axis powers were achieving greater success on Earth-X than on his own Earth, Uncle Same recruited other mystery men to accompany him to Earth-X: The Hourman, the Invisible Hood, Magno, Miss America, Neon the Unknown, and the Red Torpedo. As Uncle Sam was transporting himself and his first team of Freedom Fighters too Earth-X, Midnight and Doll Man were inadvertently transported to the German-occupied Paris of Earth-X, where they aided the Resistance. Meanwhile, Uncle Sam and his team materialized over the Pacific Ocean, where they battled Japanese war planes on their way to attack Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Though the Freedom Fighters repelled the attack, all except Uncle Sam were apparently killed.
In February 1942, Uncle Sam took Midnight and Doll Man back to Earth-2, where they contacted the All-Star Squadron and told them that the Japanese were about to invade California on Earth-X. The Spectre transported Uncle Sam, Doll Man, and five volunteering Squadron members -- the Black Condor, the Human Bomb, Phantom Lady, the Ray and the Red Bee to Earth-X, where they helped fight the invasion. While there, the Red Bee died, but Hourman turned up alive. Due to instability in the cosmic balance, three Freedom Fighters had to remain on Earth-X, while the others returned to Earth-2. Uncle Sam, Black Condor, and the Ray chose to stay.
Weeks later, the journey of Harbinger to 1942 opened an interdimensional rift through which many other mystery men journeyed from Earth-2 to Earth-X, including Doll Man, the Human Bomb, Phantom Lady, Midnight, Plastic Man, the Earth-2 counterparts of the Blackhawks, the Jester, Manhunter (Dan Richards), Quicksilver, and the Spider. They were later joined by the original Firebrand.
World War II lasted years longer on Earth-X than it did on Earths 1 or 2. The fates of many Freedom Fighters remain unknown, and those that survived stayed young over the decades, perhaps due to the mystical presence of Uncle Sam. Ultimately, Nazi Germany took over the world, but with the help of the Justice League of America and the Justice Society of America, a group of Freedom Fighters overthrew Earth-X's Nazi government.
Later, these Freedom Fighters went to Earth-1, where they found themselves wanted by the law. After the resolution of this situation the Freedom Fighters returned to Earth-X to help rebuild it. They survived the obliteration of Earth-X in the so-called Crisis on Infinite Earths.
