When Thomas Troy rubs his magic ring and says the phrase, "I wish I were the Fly," he is transformed into a costumed being called the Fly. When the Fly rubs the ring and states his name, he is changed back into Thomas Troy. He has possessed this ring since he was a child. Among the powers possessed by the Fly are the following:

The Fly's wings allow him to fly at Good speed, or about 120 mph; he can sustain such speeds for an extended period.

The Fly can cling to, and move across, vertical surfaces with Excellent ability.

The Fly can see in a 360-degree arc around himself.

The Fly has Good body armor; this means that gunfire can wound him, but not kill.

The Fly can emit a powerful (Excellent intensity) beam of light, equivalent to "the light of a million fireflies in one."

Turan designed the Fly's special weapon, which is based on compressed air technology. It has one of two effects:
The Buzz Gun can shoot silver needles (3 area range) which are drugged, to cause unconsciousness in a target. The needles cannot penetrate Excellent body armor, and the target must make a Red Endurance FEAT roll, or be rendered unconscious for 10-100 turns (1 die roll x 10).

The gun can generate a blast of noise, equivalent to "the beating of wings of thousands of flies" -- it can cause Excellent physical damage to solid matter.

Tommy Troy lived in the Westwood Orphanage, whose superintendent, Aaron Creacher, hired him out to raise money. Working for elderly Ben (aka Ezra) and Abigail March, Tommy learned that they were wizards. Late one night, he tried on a fly-shaped ring he found in the attic. It glowed and opened a door to another dimension, from which stepped Turan, of the Fly People.

He explained that millions of years before, Fly People ruled the earth. But they waged war with magic, reducing most of the population to common houseflies. Only a few of the Fly People were able to escape, fleeing to a dimensional plane outside the galaxy where they have waited patiently for "one person . . . pure of heart" to make war against greed and crime, which were their own downfall.

Troy had these qualities. Thus, whenever he rubbed the ring and said, "I wish I were the Fly," he was projected into the other dimension and returned as a costumed adult called the Fly. To become his civilian identity, all the youth needed do was utter his name. Tommy continued as the Fly throughout adulthood, cleaning up crime in Capital City.
