Background:
Freddy Freeman and his grandfather were fishing in the open sea when, thanks to a blow from Captain Marvel, the evil Captain Nazi was thrown from a plane and landed in the water nearby. He slew the elderly gentleman and knocked Freddy overboard, breaking his back among other things. Captain Marvel retrieved the boy and hurried him to a hospital, where his injuries were diagnosed as so severe, he was not expected to survive the night. Captain Marvel reverted to his alter ego Billy Batson and carried Freddy to the subterranean cavern where he first got his own powers. Summoning the wizard who bequeathed him those powers, Billy is told that "You, as Captain Marvel, can . . . pass on to this poor boy some of the mighty powers I once gave you." The hero willed it to be so and, thereafter, whenever he utters the name "Captain Marvel," Freddy becomes as strong as his mentor. When he is in his mortal identity, the young boy is crippled in the left leg. As Freddy Freeman, the youth operates a newsstand and lives in an attic apartment in Midtown.
