Young Billy Batson was an orphan who went to live with his uncle when his parents died. But the uncle took Billy's inheritance and drove him into the street, where Billy sold newspapers for a living and slept in the subway station. One night, he was approached by a stranger wearing a slouch hat and trench coat. The stranger ushered him to a "strange subway car," which carried them to a subterranean cavern. There, Billy was lead to a marble throne and introduced to the aged Egyptian wizard Shazam. Shazam explained that for 3,000 years he had helped battle evil throughout the world by using the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury (Hence, S-H-A-Z-A-M). Knowing that Billy was good and virtuous, and realizing that it was time to retire, Shazam passed on his powers to the youth. All Billy had to do was utter the sorcerer's name and he would become the grown-up Captain Marvel. Speaking it again would turn him back to the young newsboy. Though the wizard died when a granite block fell on his throne -- as was preordained -- he counseled Billy in the form of a ghost. To summon him Billy must go to the subterranean cavern and light a special brazier. In his first adventure, Billy (with help from his alter ego) proved his investigative abilities to Sterling Morris, head of radio station WHIZ, and became a roving radio reporter.
