Create an Amazing Antquarium

If you know someone who's always fancied their own farm, get them one! Ok, it may be lacking in pigs and sheep, but they can watch ants live and burrow into highly nutritious, non-toxic gel, creating an amazing pattern of tunnels. The gel enabled NASA scientists to observe and study ants during space flight to investigate how different species of animals behave in space and to see how they reacted to zero gravity. Now they've come back down to earth so you can study them at home or, if you don't like being separated from your pets while you're at work, you can take them with you and keep an eye on them on your desk. Watching them is an ideal form of stress relief (just remember to do some work!)

If the kids have been pestering you for their own pet, but you're worried the novelty will wear off after a couple of weeks, the Ant Farm is the perfect compromise! If they're not convinced that ants are quite the same as having their own puppy, simply point out that ants are the longest living of all insects and the world's strongest creature in relation to their size with the ability to carry 10-20 times their bodyweight and they'll soon seem a much cooler option than some boring old dog that needs walking every day! The ants require minimal care and there's no need to feed them as the Ant Farm is a self contained environment in which they can make tunnels whilst the gel provides adequate nutrients for them to live. Simply prod four little holes into the gel to get the tunnel network started, collect some ants to live in the colony (the kids will love this part!), put them into the Ant Farm, replace the lid and watch them. Within days you'll be able to see the pattern of tunnels your new little pets have created in the gel. If you can't be bothered to carry out the process of ant selection yourself, then you can send away for the ants.

There's enough air in the farm to last an ant lifetime, but we advise you remove the lid off for a few minutes each week to aerate the interior and give your ants a breath of fresh air, but don't forget to replace the lid, as we don't accept any responsibility for you finding your much-loved pet squashed in the carpet!
