Animation of reversed biased diode. The left end of the diode connects to the positive end of a battery. The battery has an arrow across it indicating that its value can change. The negative end of the battery goes to one end of a resistor. The other end of the resistor goes to the right end of the diode. There is a voltmeter connected across the battery. At the start of the animation loop the voltmeter indicates zero. The diode has its inherent depletion region. As the loop runs the voltage increases. The dots move to the left away from the junction and the circles move to the right also away from the junction. The dots and circles seem to be absorbed by the lines at the left and right edges respectively. The depletion region grows wider until at the end of the loop there is a single line of dots at the left and a single line of circles at the right. The range of the voltage change might be as little as 100 or as much as 1000 volts. End verbal description.
