                                                                   Fonthill

This web page is dedicated to a large house called Fonthill located along the A25 in Reigate, Surrey.   It was built in around the mid 1860s & took its name from Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire, a vast and once famous Gothick folly that had long been demolished even then.

It is difficult to find exact dates when it was built or events connected with it.

Its first listed inhabitant was William John Payne. What he was I cannot say, but I imagine he must have been fairly wealthy.

It continued as a private house until 1924 when, on the death or removal of a Mrs. Riddoch, its, last private owner, it bacame the Fonthill Private Hotel until 1950 when it became a Home for Retired Nurses.
