Hardware and Software Recommendations

 

The store manager of Discount New & Used Tire Co. hired our team to digitalize his store’s system. He told us that he needs three computers to be used in the store. He wants one of these computers to be as a server and all the files should be stored in it. The other two computers should be able to connect to the main computer and have access to all the files and other resources. He preferred the connection of these computers to be wireless. He wants his computers to able to connect to the Internet. He asked us to equip his system with word processing software of our choice. He wants spreadsheet, data management, presentation graphics, and email software to be available for his system. He asked also for software can be used for accounting. Plus he wants to make sure that he will be well protected when his computers connected to the Internet.

Our team studied his requirements and we came up with these suggestions:

We found that the volume of data he wants to store in his system is not huge, so we decided that he needs a server with these specifications:

· Primary Processor: Dual Core Intel® Xeon® 5080, 2x2MB Cache, 3.73GHz, 1066MHZ FSB. 

· Additional Processor: Dual Core Intel® Xeon® 5080 2x2MB Cache, 3.73GHz, 1066MHZ FSB.

· Memory: 4GB 533MHz (8x512MB), Single Ranked DIMMs.

· Operating System: Windows Server® 2003 R2, Standard Edition, Includes 5 CALs.

· Bezel: Rack Bezel.

· Hard Drive Configuration: Integrated SAS/SATA RAID 0, PERC 5/i Integrated.

· Primary Controller: PERC 5/i, x4 Backplane, Integrated Controller Card.

· Hard Drive Backplane: 1x4 Backplane for 3.5-inch Hard Drives.

· Primary Hard Drive: 146GB, SAS, 3.5-inch, 10K RPM Hard Drive.

· Network Adaptor: Intel® PRO 1000PF Single Port Server Adapter, Gigabit, Optical PCI-Ex.

· TCP/IP Offload Engine Enablement: Broadcom Dual Port TCP/IP Offload Engine Not Enabled. 

 

 

For the two client computers we suggested two notebooks, and because these notebooks will be used only to access the server, we are suggesting the following specifications:

· Processor: Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2300E (1.66GHz/667MHz FSB).

· Operating System: Genuine Windows® XP Professional.

· Memory: 2GB Dual Shared Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms).

· Hard Drive: 60GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive.

For the software required for the system, we suggested the following:

· Office Software: Microsoft Office Professional-Small Business, To cover the need to word processing software, spreadsheet software, data management software, presentation graphic software, and email software. All in one plus it is wide used among people with friendly interface.

· Anti-Virus/Security Suite: McAfee Security Center with VirusScan, Firewall, Spyware Removal. All in one to be connected safely to the Internet.

· Financial Software: Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting 2006. It is ideal with the Microsoft Office.
