New Ethernet Interface for Wireless Modems
Dateline: 8/16/05
Multi-Tech's external wireless modems are now available with an Ethernet
interface. This new connectivity option provides users with shared
Internet access utilizing one IP address. The built-in routing
capabilities also provide DHCP services and firewall security utilizing
Network Address Translation.
The new interface allows the modem to be configured for one of three
network connections: always-on, wake-up on ring, or dial-on demand. The
always-on network connection automatically establishes a wireless data
connection and allows for around the clock surveillance, monitoring or
real-time data acquisition of any remote Ethernet device such as a Web
camera. If the data link is dropped in the event of poor reception or a
complete loss of service, it will automatically re-establish the data
link. The wake-up on ring configuration allows the modem to "wake up"
and initiate a connection when it detects an incoming ring. For security
reason, you can setup the modem to wake up based on the caller ID. This
configuration is ideal for reducing the costs associated with the modem
being online and available 24/7. When configured for dial-on demand, the
wireless modem only accesses the Internet when data is present. This
configuration is ideal for sharing Internet access among networked PCs.
The new Ethernet interface will be shipping mid-September on the
MultiModem EDGE, MultiModem CDMA, and MultiModem GPRS wireless modems.

Highlights
Secure VPN Connections. The RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance uses the
IPSec industry standard protocol, data encryption, and the Internet to
provide high performance, secure VPN connections. For LAN-to-LAN
connectivity, the RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance utilizes the IPSec
protocol to provide up to 5 tunnels with strong 3DES or AES encryption using
IKE and PSK key management. For client-to-LAN connectivity, Multi-Tech
provides optional IPSec client software allowing road warriors secure access
to the company's internal network.
Connect up to 253 Users to the Internet with Broadband Speed. With the
RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance, up to 253 users are connected to the
Internet with only one IP account. The WAN Ethernet port supports DSL or
cable speeds of up to 6M bps.
Built-in 10/100 Switch. The integrated 4-port 10/100M bps switch eliminates
the need for an additional hub or switch to connect users not on a LAN. It
ensures high-speed transmission and can serve as a completely dedicated full
duplex backbone.
Network Security. The RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance uses the NAT
protocol to hide internal, non-routable IP addresses and allows internal
hosts with unregistered IP addresses to function as Internet-reachable
servers.
Automatic Dial Backup. The RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance also provides
an additional serial port that, when connected to a dial-up modem or ISDN
terminal adaptor, can serve as a backup resource for Internet access if your
cable or DSL service goes down. It can also serve as the primary connection
if you do not have broadband connectivity yet in your area.
Virtual Server Support. In addition to providing shared Internet access, the
RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance can
support a web, ftp or other Internet servers. Once configured, it only
accepts unsolicited IP packets addressed to the web, ftp or other specified
servers.
Dynamic DNS Client. The RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance has a built in
Dynamic DNS client that is compatible with DynDNS.org. It automatically
sends an update to the DynDNS.org update server if the WAN IP address
changes. A registered Dynamic DNS account allows you to host your own web
site, mail server, or other services on the Internet without having to
obtain a static IP address or keep track of a dynamic IP address. It also
aids in creating static-to-dynamic or dynamic-to-dynamic IPSec VPN tunnels.
Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) Feature. The FQDN featured on the
RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance allows you to utilize a static name in
the IPSec VPN setup, like "branchoffice.dyndns.org", instead of a dynamic IP
address, to create static-to-dynamic or dynamic-to-dynamic VPN IPSec
tunnels. This allows all of the IPSec VPN connections to act like
static-to-static connections. The RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance checks
the FQDN IPSec configuration every two minutes for IP address changes. If
the IP address is different than the last time it checked, it drops the
current tunnel and creates a new one. This helps to keep IPSec VPN tunnels
readily available with minimal interruptions in data communication.

Highlights
RouteFinder™ Applications. The RouteFinder™ security appliance combines
firewall, e-mail anti-virus protection (option), content filtering, spam
filtering and Virtual Private Networking (VPN) in one box. It is a
cost-effective, easy to manage solution that is ideal for small to
medium-sized businesses looking to add one or all of the following
applications to their network:
Firewall Security. As businesses move toward always-on broadband Internet
connections, the corporate network becomes more vulnerable to Internet
hackers. The RouteFinder™ security appliance provides a full-featured,
ICSA-certified Stateful Packet Inspection firewall to provide security from
intruders attempting to access the office LAN.
E-mail Anti-Virus Protection. An optional e-mail virus protection
subscription ensures the network is protected against the latest virus
outbreaks.
Content Filtering. A free, one-year URL content filtering subscription
allows you to automatically manage what Web content is available.
Spam Filtering. A free spam filtering feature protects your network from
unsolicited bulk e-mail utilizing real-time as well as user-definable white
and black lists.
Remote User VPN. The RouteFinder™ security appliance replaces traditional
dial-in remote access by allowing a remote user to connect to the corporate
LAN through a secure tunnel over the Internet. The advantage is that a
remote user can make a local call to an Internet Service Provider, without
sacrificing the company's security, as opposed to a long distance call to
the corporate remote access server.
Branch Office VPN. The RouteFinder™ security appliance sends network traffic
over the branch office Internet connection instead of relying on dedicated
leased line connections. This can save thousands of dollars in line costs
and reduce overall hardware and management expenses.
Plug-and-Play Security Appliance. The RouteFinder™ security appliance plugs
in at the Internet connection of each office. It provides three independent
network interfaces (LAN, WAN and DMZ) that separate the protected office
network from the Internet while offering an optional public network for
hosting Web, e-mail or ftp servers. Each network interface is independently
monitored and visually displayed on the front of the appliance.
State-of-the-Art Firewall Security. The RouteFinder™ security appliance is
ICSA-certified to provide network layer security utilizing Stateful Packet
Inspection, the sophisticated firewall technology found in large enterprise
firewalls, to protect the network against intruders and Denial of Service
(DoS) attacks. It also uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to hide
internal, non-routable IP addresses and allows internal hosts with
unregistered IP addresses to function as Internet-reachable servers. In
addition to network layer security, the RouteFinder™ security appliance
provides application level security using SMTP, HTTP, DNS and SOCKS proxies.
It also utilizes filters to block specific Internet content to protect
against viruses, dangerous ActiveX controls, Java, Javascript and Cookies.
An automatic update feature provides the highest level of security by
automatically downloading and installing the latest system software and
security patches protecting against any newly discovered hacker attacks with
a single click.
E-mail Anti-Virus Protection. Computer viruses are one of the leading
security threats to Internet-connected networks. Users can unknowingly
download and launch dangerous viruses that can damage data or cause computer
crashes. An optional e-mail virus protection subscription utilizes
Kaspersky®'s high-performance, ICSA-tested, antivirus engine which checks
both incoming and outgoing e-mail for viruses in real-time. Automatic
anti-virus updates are downloaded at user-defined intervals to ensure
protection is current. The e-mail anti-virus protection can be easily
renewed on an annual basis. Ask about our free 30-day evaluation.
Content Filtering. The RouteFinder™ security appliance includes a one-year
URL content filtering subscription. It utilizes SurfControl®'s content
categorization list, the world's largest database of Internet content, which
includes 5 million Web sites covering over 900 million Web pages. Daily
updates of categorized sites are available for download. In addition, it
includes URL access and deny reporting. The subscription can easily be
renewed on an annual basis.
Spam Filtering. A free spam filtering feature protects your network from
unsolicited bulk e-mail utilizing real-time as well as user-definable white
and black lists. In addition, the spam filter checks for null sender and bad
address patterns in e-mail addresses. It also utilizes the reverse DNS test
as well as attachment and expression filters.
Secure VPN Connections. The RouteFinder™ security appliance uses IPSec and
PPTP industry standard protocols, data encryption, user authentication, and
the Internet to provide high-performance, secure VPN connections. For
LAN-to-LAN connectivity, the RouteFinder™ security appliance utilizes the
IPSec protocol with strong 3DES and AES encryption using IKE and PSK key
management. In addition, it provides up to 3M bps of encryption throughput.
For client-to-LAN connectivity, Multi-Tech offers optional IPSec client
software. The RouteFinder™ security appliance also supports remote users
that want to use the PPTP VPN client built into the Windows operating
system. This provides 40-bit or 128-bit encryption, user name and password
authentication.
Reporting. The RouteFinder™ security appliance includes a suite of
integrated monitoring and reporting tools that help administrators
troubleshoot the Internet security system and report to management the usage
of the Internet. This includes reporting on system uptime, hardware and
network utilization. HTTP and SMTP proxy reports provide information about
any actions needed to handle virusinfected e-mails. The RouteFinder™
security appliance also disables and logs attempted port scans. In addition,
it provides accounting reports and a self-monitor that sends an e-mail
notification of system-level issues.
Robust, Easy-to-Use Management. The RouteFinder™ security appliance includes
robust management support allowing a network administrator to securely
manage the devices either through a web browser or at the command line. The
browserbased option uses the HTTP or HTTPS protocol, also known as SSL
(Secure Sockets Layer) to provide 128-bit encryption to secure the
management session. The command line interface is accessible via SSH (Secure
Shell) and supports SCP (Secure Copy).
User Authentication. To increase the level of security, user identity can be
verified before access to Internet services is permitted. The RouteFinder™
security appliance supports authentication at a local user database as well
as at external user databases, like Windows 2000 or RADIUS server.
Automatic Dial Backup. The RouteFinder™ security appliance provides a serial
port that, when connected to a dial-up modem or ISDN terminal adaptor, can
serve as a backup resource for Internet access and VPN tunneling if your
cable or DSL service goes down.
Web Caching Server. To enhance performance, the RouteFinder™ security
appliance provides web caching. By storing frequently visited web sites on a
local drive, web surfing performance can be improved by as much as 50%.
Optional VPN Client Software. Multi-Tech provides easy-touse IPSec VPN
client software that transparently secures Internet communications anytime,
anywhere. VPN client software is ideal for business users who travel
frequently or work from home providing secure remote access through the
RouteFinder™ security appliance for applications such as remote access, file
transfer, email, Web browsing, messaging or IP telephony. Encryption and
authentication operations are completely transparent to the end user. In
general, IPSec provides stronger encryption than PPTP resulting in better
overall security.
RouteFinderSOHO™. The RouteFinderSOHO™ security appliance is ideal for the
small branch office or telecommuter who needs secure access to the corporate
LAN. In addition to providing a WAN Ethernet port for DSL or cable broadband
Internet access, it also offers both client-to-LAN and LAN-to-LAN VPN
connectivity based on the IPSec or PPTP protocols. It supports up to 10
IPSec tunnels and provides 3DES and AES encryption to ensure that your
information remains private.

Highlights
Direct Inward Dial (DID). The FaxFinder fax server's routing capability is a
function of DID which allows multiple phone numbers to be placed on a single
phone line. Every network user is assigned an individual fax phone number.
The last 3 or 4 digits of that number correspond to the individual's fax
extension. Senders simply dial the individual's fax telephone number (no
special procedures are required). The FaxFinder fax server ensures the fax
is delivered directly to their e-mail box.
Faxes Routed Directly to the Desktop. To route faxes directly to the
desktop, simply plug the FaxFinder fax server into a LAN, hook up a DID
trunk, and assign the user's e-mail addresses to the DID numbers. A fax is
then automatically received through the DID line, converted to a TIFF file
and delivered to the user over a LAN or WAN. Once received, users can view,
print or forward the fax as an e-mail to another e-mail user.
Fax Security. With the FaxFinder fax server, a small business can afford to
provide the CEO, President, CFO, COO, Human Resources and others with
virtual private fax lines. Because faxes are delivered directly to the
user's e-mail box, it offers a high degree of security for both the sender
and the recipient.
Fax Completes Unified Messaging. Some PBX solutions deliver voice mail to a
user's e-mail box. Many, however, don't offer a fax solution. The FaxFinder
fax server fills this gap and completes the unified messaging solution by
delivering faxes to one inbox. In addition, by taking headquarters fax
functionality and pushing it out to your mobile sales force and remote
locations, you enable access to information from any location.
Sending Faxes. The FaxFinder fax server client software allows the user to
compose a fax from any application that utilizes a printer. To send, the
user simply "prints" the document to the software, selects a cover page (or
creates their own) and enters a destination telephone number for the fax.
The user can build one fax of multiple documents from multiple applications,
as well as schedule faxes to be sent at a later time.
Fax Capacity. The FaxFinder fax server utilizes a 750K buffer to receive
faxes. It can receive about 15 pages of text-based faxes (typically 50K per
page) before it splits the fax into a second e-mail. If graphic images are
included, the number of pages received per e-mail is reduced based on the
size and type of graphic. The 2-port model provides two lines for higher
volume fax traffic as well as simultaneous inbound/outbound faxing.

Highlights
Faxes Routed Directly to the Desktop. Many PBX's and key telephone systems
use Direct Inward Dialing (DID), Digital DID, or Dialed Number
Identification Service (DNIS) provided by a T1 or E1 for direct dialing to
internal extensions. Unused numbers from these lines can be used for fax
numbers, providing employees with their own individual fax number. When a
call is received, the PBX converts the number into DTMF tones and sends it
to the fax server. The fax server answers the call, receives the fax,
converts it to a TIFF file, attaches it to an e-mail, and sends it to the
correct recipient. Once received, users can view, print or forward the fax
as an e-mail to another e-mail user.
Fax Security. With the FaxFinder fax server, a small business can afford to
provide the CEO, President, CFO, COO, Human Resources and others with

user simply "prints" the document to the software, selects a cover page (or

The client software forwards the fax to the fax server, and it gets sent out
via the PBX. The user can build one fax of multiple documents from multiple
applications, as well as schedule faxes to be sent at a later time.
Fax Capacity. The FaxFinder fax server utilizes a 750K buffer to receive
