Travis Bickle's Bad Day

BOOKS

FILMS

This part of the website is dedicated to what are, in my opinion, some of the best films and books ever made. There are a lot of them here. As a man with two VCRs who can't afford cable or a productive social life, I can honsestly say that I have seen just about every movie ever made. While I will leave the reviews to the AFI and Roger Ebert, I think I can honestly call myself an expert at seperating the good from the bad. So this is my list of films and books which I found interesting. If you are headed to the video store with an extra $2.50 burning a hole in your pocket and don't know what to get, these are my suggestions for a quality night of viewing. As far as genres, I am definitely pre-disposed to war movies, horror films, and gangster movies, but I have tried to provide a reasonably good representation of all genres here. And if school or college hasn't completely ruined books for you either, there are some suggestions below. If you agree or disagree with my choices, write me and tell me about it, but just remember that I am always right and you are wrong. There's an E Mail listed here and on the main page. If you would like more info about any of the titles listed below, I went to the trouble (believe me it wasn't easy) of hunting down quality links for each of the choices. Just click on the name of the film/book, and it will take you to the related site. That's all for now, have fun.

Updates:

- January 23, 2006-

Hey fuckers. This is probably going to be my last update. For all intents and purposes this site is done. I completed most of the updates I wanted to in six months of intense labor. The code has all been updated for the most part and I fixed a lot of the graphics and developed some fucking awesome backgrounds. At this point the only thing I can do to improve shit around here is learn CSS coding and pay for a real site instead of letting geocities consistently ruin this one. I haven’t got the fucking time or patience to devote to learning all the new gay computer geek shit that’s supposedly changing the face of the internet. It all seems like bullshit to me. HTML was simple and efficient and made sense. I can’t even begin to understand or care about this new shit that makes what was previously one line of code into 20 different kinds of fucking codes. I’m not getting paid for this and I have better things to do. On my second point, Geocities has fucking raped this site for all it’s worth by throwing up ad banners that take up half my page and limiting my bandwidth to the point where the site is down every single time I check it. To that end, I’m mirroring this site in Angelfire and updating all the links so they will lead there. That will break up some of the bandwidth and allow my backgrounds to stay and serve as my final fuck you to geocities. I was going to pay for a domain name and private site, but Geocities strong arming me by fucking up the free site I’ve had for years doesn’t exactly give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about giving them my money to get their shit off my page. I never wanted a pay site. Like I said in my last update, when I started this page seven years ago the point was just to get a free site to make fun of shit and talk about drinking and death metal. I was 21 then, in college with no responsibilities, drinking heavily and going to shows every weekend. I’m 29 now, have a full time job and a kid and a lot of fucking bills. The last thing I’m interested in doing is adding a perpetual expense to my budget as protection money so Geocities doesn’t shut this site down. And honestly I could fucking care less. I don’t have the time to write reviews or update as much anymore and most of what I have to say has already been posted. I might do some updates to Lyrical Warfare because I just started that page and there’s only a couple of reviews so far. The rest of the site is more or less done though and I don’t feel the need to keep updating just for the sake of updating. For anyone still interested in any of this shit, I have a profile and some additional info, possibly a blog, started at www.myspace.com/fallenempire2000. I’ll also be spending some time with my industrial death metal project 20 Days Of Darkness. Look for the name because it’s gonna be bigger than the Beatles. We’ll all be fucking supermodels, shooting up, and blowing rails off of platinum CDs a year from now. I just downloaded like $10,000 worth of mixing boards, and synth, guitar, and drum effect programs for free. Limewire bitches. There might be a site at MP3.com once we get some fucking songs written. So that’s basically it for this site. It was fun for a while. Remember don’t trust the government, the far right are an exciting mixture of incompetent religious freaks and truly dangerous people, and the far left are a bunch of shrill, whiny, hypocritical bitches who would be just as dangerous if they were in power. Choose your own path in life. And that bullshit that clear channel plays is not fucking metal. I’ll leave you with my final reviews for 2006. Acid Bath is and always will be the coolest fucking band that ever existed. They only released two albums so it would be pretty hard for you to fuck this up. Go and buy both of those CDs, drop a couple tabs and put that shit on repeat for about ten hours. You can thank me later. For people who still listen to the radio, pay attention because Tool is the most important mainstream band playing today and Maynard's been holed up somewhere for months working on a new album. Anything they release is going to be the best album of 2006. All That Remains is the best band playing in the underground right now, they are truly talented and would be huge if anyone had the balls to play real metal on the radio, take my word and buy anything they put out because it's going to slay these other poser commercial metal bands. Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath are the most important bands ever to exist, you should already own everything they put out even that weak shit when it was only Tony Iommi in the band or when David Gilmour was trying to sound like Dire Straits. That shit is better than 90% of the records you will ever buy. Throw out your Slipknot and Staind albums and pick up as many Mercyful Fate and King Diamond records as you can find and listen to that shit over and over. Homeboy’s a certified member of the church of satan, has a four octave vocal range, still rocks the corpsepaint, and has been doing the same shit for 25 years regardless of trends. That’s fucking metal. Later bitches.

BOOKS

Band Of Brothers - Stephen Ambrose Well written history of honor and valor in World War II combat. The mini series based on the book is on constant rotation on the history channel but somehow still worth watching every single time.

Complete Works - William Blake Not reccomended for light reading. Poetry, philosophy, and thoughts exploring altered perceptions, religion, society, and the nature of reality. Written over 200 years ago, but still relevant.

Helter Skelter - Vincent Bugliosi The Manson murders dissected and analyzed by the prosecuting attorney of the case. An intersting look at group psychology, the counterculture, and Manson's delusional paranoia. It is also a great story of crime and punishment in America.

What Uncle Sam Really Wants - Noam Chomsky Anyone who has had the pleasure of trying to sort through one of Chomsky's many lengthy foreign policy excursions will appreciate the size of this book. Less than 100 pages and every single page is a wealth of information about US foreign poilicy, the CIA, NSA, and the master plan behind it all. This book will give you an education you will not soon forget. Conspiracy freaks will fucking love this.

The Redneck Manifesto - Jim Goad I actually found this book at the community library of all places. Goad takes on the role of an amateur historian of white trash redneck crackers, and actually puts together one of the most consistently entertaining and informative books I have ever read. He breaks down 400 years of racism and stereotypes to a giant conspiracy created by the upper classes to keep the working class seperated. This is one conspiracy theory that actually makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Detailed covereage on the history of white slavery and indentured servitude, the labor movement, the more recent milita movement, and of course lots of jokes about Elvis, Bigfoot, and space aliens. Read this book if you can find it. If you can't find it, you're not looking hard enough.

About Face - The Odyssey Of An American Warrior - Col. David H. Hackworth First I should warn you that this book is about 900 pages long, and once you start reading it is virtually impossible to put down. The autobiography of a decorated soldier, covering the years immediately after world war two through the end of Vietnam. This is an excellent reference point for an education about the cold war and the US military. Hackworth served in the occupation of Italy in the 40's and fought with distinction in Korea, then became disillusioned with the miliatary in Vietnam and went on to become one of the most vocal critics of US foreign policy. I heard somewhere that the infamous Col. Kurtz of Apoccalypse Now was based on Hackworth's actions in Korea, where he used guerilla warfare and ambush tactics to consistently win battles in a losing war. Hackworth argues that this strategy could have won Vietnam as well. An absolutely brilliant book, detailed and coherent explanation of difficult subjects, and an interesting story.

Brave New World - Aldous Huxley Dystopian novel showing the downside of a theoretical world made perfect by genetic engineering and scientific progress at the expense of individuality. Fun stuff. Sounds a lot like Orwell but written about 15 years before that book.

Inevitable Revolutions - Walter LaFeber The history of American imperialism in Central America. Read all about your government (the CIA) doing things you thought only other countries did. Definitely a biased viewpoint, but nonetheless an excellent source of information on Central American history and politics.

Tales - H.P. Lovecraft Ten thousand death metal bands can't be completely wrong. This guy was a genuis and a clearly disturbed individual. Very dark and unsettling horror from the mind of a fucking madman.

Lords Of Chaos - Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind Subtitled the Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground, this book outlines in detail the rise of Norway's underground black metal scene and the murder and arson and outright satanism that drove the early scene. Detailed interviews with members of Emperor, Mayhem, Ulver, and others along with true crime accounts of what really happened when a whole country didn't realize that Venom was fucking joking. Truly dark and fascinating story.

Our Dumb Century - The Writers Of The Onion Cynical satirical humor about the events of the 20th century. These guys should win a fucking award for this book.

Animal Farm - George Orwell Political commentary doesn't get any better than different breeds of pigs fighting for control over the general population. The moral- Absolute power corrupts absolutely, trust no one.

1984 - George Orwell Bleak portrayl of a totalitarian future society. Interesting story from one of the best authors of our time, definitely recommended. Click the link to go to the essay I wrote on this book for Philosophy 206 a few years ago.

Collected Works - Edgar Allan Poe The man had a few problems. He is the greatest writer who ever lived. This is horror the way it should be experienced: without the limits which sanity would otherwise impose on an author.

The Killer Angels - Michael Shaara The battle of Gettysburg from the perspective of those who fought there. One of the best books ever written on military strategy, ideology, and the human element of war.

The Jungle - Upton Sinclair A dark look at factory life in turn of the century Chicago through the eyes of a Lithuanian immigrant and his family. This book is dark, disturbing, and at times gets repetitive, but it still stands as one of the all time classics.

The Art Of War - Sun Tzu Ancient book of Chinese philosophy concerning warfare and politics. This book reads like a how to manual of guerilla warfare and how to win against superior numbers. It is surprising how little of this is actually outdated. After 2000 years most of the ideas and strategies still apply. The secret of this book lies in interpretation and application of the basic philosophies of warfare to any area in life where they may be relevant. Absolutely brilliant concept and one of the best books I have ever read.

The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy - J.R.R. Tolkien Giving nerds a reason to keep living since 1954. Read all three books if you have about two years of your life to devote to talking trees and elves and shit. Good stuff.

Johnny Got His Gun - Dalton Trumbo A young soldier enlists to fight in WWI and has his legs, arms, and face blown off in an artillery attack. He remains alive for years, deaf dumb and blind, trying to make sense of the world around him. Metallica based the song "One" on this book. It is really disturbing, Trumbo however makes his point very well.

A People's History Of The United States - Howard Zinn Revisionist historian labeled a radical for telling the truth. History written from the bottom up, not about the victors but those who lost in America. Detailed coverage of the underground labor and anarchist movements, the real face of war and imperialism, and the European invasion of the Americas. God damn I love this book. I bought three copies so far because I wore the covers off of the first two.

FILMS

Airplane "Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue." This movie is funny as hell. click on the link for a full transcript. (comedy)

All Quiet On The Western Front World War I through the eyes of an idealist German soldier. Very realistic for its time (1931), and good honest filmmaking with interesting characters. The newer color version from the 1970s is also just as good. One of the best war movies ever made, definitely a classic. The book is a classic as well. (war/classic)

American Beauty Effective and well made satire of suburban angst (drama)

American History X Skinheads in Venice Beach curb check people, beat up immigrants, play basketball and get awesome tattoos. Sounds like a good time to me. (drama)

The Amityville Horror Old horror movie with decent acting, a good plot, and some truly disturbing sequences. The blood flowing from the faucet, the single pair of red eyes moving outside the window, the flies, and the eerie voices coming from the walls . Delivering strongly at unexpected moments. Supposedly based on a true story. (horror)

Animal House I wish college was really like this. (comedy)

Apoccalypse Now This is a really strange movie. Very surreal in excecution but blending the reality of the Vietnam War as more or less the perfect setting for this story. A lot of symbolism and subtelty involved here. Watch this a few times. (war)

Blade Runner Science fiction film noir about genetically engineered slave labor cyborgs with mental problems and the cynical, depressed bounty hunter who's job it is to track and kill them. Depicts the future as a sprawling soulless urban wasteland of violent crime and commericalism. Much more likely to happen than anything in Terminator (science fiction)

Blazing Saddles You would have to see this movie to understand anything that I could possibly write about it. I suggest clicking on the link. (comedy)

The Blair Witch Project The film has its flaws but ultimately works very well at its purpose which is to play upon primal base fears and evoke terror without actually showing anything that by itself is terrifying. Its an interesting psychological trick and a unique apporach to making a horror film. I just can't figure out why the hell they didn't follow the river out of the woods instead of crossing over it every time. Stupid kids. (horror/indie)

Boyz N The Hood 40s and blunts and crips and bloods and guns. That's the formula for a damn good movie if you ask me. (drama)

Braveheart 13th century Scotland guerilla warfare. Some of the most realistic and violent battle scenes ever put on film. The story is based in fact with some addition of Hollywood fabrication for the sake of plot and character. Excellent movie, definitely on my top ten list of the greatest. (war/drama/action)

Bringing Out The Dead Scorcese film about an ambulance driver losing his mind over the nature of his work. The movie looks like an updated version of Taxi Driver in some places and that alone is reason enough to include it here. I really liked the part where they get drunk and flip the ambulance over before beating the crap out of some homeless guy and smashing out car windows with a baseball bat. Looks like a good time. (drama)

Caligula Surprisingly historically accurate portrayl of the most clearly disturbed individual ever to rule an empire. This movie barely edges out Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer as the most disturbing film I have ever seen. Malcom McDowell from Clockwork Orange puts in an amazing performance as he murders his uncle, bankrupts the Roman treasury, fucks his sister, and brutally kills most of his enemies and allies all in the course of a four year reign. Produced by Bob Guccione from Penthouse, the film is intercut with hardcore porn scenes of Roman orgies. Sex or violence, pick your vice it's all fucking here. Brilliant character study in the corrupting influence of absolute power and the madness and brutality of classical civilization. (historical drama)

Casino Scorcese, De Niro, and Pesci get together for the third time to make another kick ass movie (See Goodfellas, Raging Bull). The story of how the mafia controlled Las Vegas and then lost it all because people let power go to their heads. This is a great gangster movie and some of the best work that Scorcese has ever done. (crime/drama)

CB4 This movie is like the gangster rap version of Spinal Tap. If you have some spare time, download CB4's song "Sweat From My Balls" off of Limewire and play it real loud when grandma's in the room. (comedy)

Citizen Kane Dark story of an ordinary man's rise to power and his ultimate corruption and downfall. I had to include this one because of the whole AFI "best movie ever made" thing. Everyone should see this. (classic/drama)

Clash Of The Titans Ancient mythology and awesome looking 70's stop motion animation combined. This movie simply looks cool. Fairly decent plot about some guy on a mythological quest to save his woman from jealous gods and demons. Along the way he crosses into the land of the dead and fights giant scorpions, Gorgons, two headed wolves, giant sea monsters, etc. Release the fucking Kraken. (action)

Clerks For an indie movie this is a really good script and decent acting. I especially liked Silent Bob and Jay, and Bob's Russian metal singer cousin Olaf. Skerlnik. (indie/comedy)

A Clockwork Orange Yet another reason why Stanley Kubrick is the best filmmaker of our time. Ultra-violence, weird nazi-like scientists, and the downside of anti-psychotic treatment. This movie is truly fucked up. Its all very surreal. Kind of funny actually, but very disturbing at the same time, a hard combination which Kubrick handles extremely well. (classic/science fiction)

Das Boot This movie follows a German subamrine crew during World War II on a mission in the North Atlantic. Based in real life accounts and very true to fact. There is no compromise in showing the brutality, the excitement, and ultimately the terror of submarine warfare. The visuals are very effective in conveying the claustrophobic nature of the ship, and the psychological impact is strong during the battle scenes in which the ship is slowly sinking and the crew waits in silence for depth charges to hit them. By far the best foreign movie I have ever seen and it ranks high on my list of all time greatest war movies. (war)

Deliverance This movie is great. Where else can you see a kid with no teeth playing the banjo, Burt Reynolds getting his ass kicked, and Ned Beatty getting sodomized by two shotgun weilding mountain men. Couple this with enough booze and funny looking rednecks to fill a corps of the Montana Freemans Militia, and you've got yourself a damn good movie. I guess this was supposed to be serious, but most people think its funny as hell. Either way its worth watching. (drama/action)

Dirty Harry Nothing spells action like Clint Eastwood as a pissed off cop with a 44 magnum and a tendency toward beating the living shit out of people. This is the type of movie which just couldn't be made today. I think there are five or six films total. I recommend the original and The Dead Pool as the best in the series. Watch all of these if you feel lucky. Punk. (action/crime)

Don't Be A Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood This is really stupid but it is still funny as hell. (comedy)

The Doors Jim Morrison and the dark side of the 60s. Even if you are not a Doors fan, this is still a decent picture. If you are a Doors fan, this is a great picture. Some of Oliver Stones best work. I liked the tripping in the desert scene. Damn I want to score some peyote now. (drama/music)

Dr. Strangelove This movie is both hilarious and profoundly disturbing at the same time. Once again another Kubrick movie. (classic/comedy)

Ed Wood Probably the worst filmmaker of all time but you have to give him credit for not giving up on his vision. Watch this movie before you see Plan 9 from Outer Space and somehow the whole thing will make a lot more sense than it was ever intended to. (comedy)

Event Horizon Some very nice science fiction horror. This movie is like the demonic version of 2001. You need to see this. (science fiction/horror)

The Evil Dead Trilogy Great horror filmmaking. These movies are so sick and disturbing that even they don't take themselves seriously. It is overkill of blood and gore taken to such an extreme that it is actually completely hilarious. Sumerian demons are ressurected in a cabin in the woods by a group of dumb teenagers These demons then proceed to take over their bodies and force them to kill each other in increasingly grotesque and bizzare ways, including chainsaws, shotguns, gardening tools, knives, workbench vices, etc. Watch all three of these if you have the time, the second is by far the best. (horror)

The Exorcist This movie is pure fucking evil. (horror)

Falling Down Michael Douglas stars as an unemployed office geek who loses it one day during a traffic jam and goes on a spree of vigilante justice aimed at the little things in the world that piss everyone off on a daily basis. He busts up a convenience store for charging too much for soda on a hot day, shoots up a McDonalds for not serving breakfast after 11, and kicks ass on gang members and neo nazis who give him a hard time. This movie can be slow at times but it is definitely an underrated masterpiece portrait of psychological instability and the little things which make us all a little insane from time to time. (suspense)

First Blood Before John Rambo was a long running joke with no punchline he was a sullen psychotic loner just back from Vietnam who a few redneck cops fucked with a little too hard. Incredibly solid acting, lots of shit blowing up, and Brian Dennehy gets shot in the taint with an M-60. You can't beat that for entertainment value. "If you're going to send 200 men into the woods to look for him you forgot one thing. You're going to need a lot more bodybags." Yeah bitch. (action)

Friday the 13th Series Jason fucking kills people with a machete. That shit is pretty hardcore. He gets my vote for best crazed slasher just for the machete and the fucking mask. Homeboy is not to be fucked with. Plus he just kills everyone he sees for no reason. Good shit. (horror)

Full Metal Jacket Kubrick goes to Vietnam to explore the "duality of man" against the backdrop of firefights, destruction, and marine boot camp. One of the best war movies I have ever seen. Lee Ermey as Drill Seargant Hartman is one hardcore motherfucker. The first half hour of this movie is the best film dialogue ever written. (war)

Gettysburg The film adaption of Sharra's Killer Angels book. The first three hour movie I've seen where all three hours are completely necessary. Incredible battle sequences, character adaptions, and a cast which stars everyone. This is easily the best Civil War movie ever made. The transition from book to film is flawless. (war)

Gladiator Absolute fucking brutality in ancient Rome. Excellent performances from Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, amazing battle scenes, and a whole lot of senseless violence. What more could you ask for. (action/drama/war)

The Godfather I-III The epic of the Corleone family and their legitimate business dealings. Brando, Pacino, and De Niro, you really can't go wrong with that. It made me want to join the mafia. Watch all three if you have about six or seven hours to kill. (crime/drama)

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly This is one kick ass movie. Lots of guns and money, bad people, and ugly people. Everything a decent western should be. (western)

Goodfellas Another modern classic from Scorcese with De Niro playing the conflicted mobster and Joe Pesci playing the fucking psychopath (See Casino for the same dynamic, Raging Bull for that dynamic in reverse). Great movie with one classic scene after another. Not a weak moment in the entire film and plenty of savage violence, big cadillacs, and bad suits. This is how a mafia movie should be made. (crime/drama)

Hamburger Hill This movie never got the recognition of its late 80's Vietnam counterparts like Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. Its a damn shame because it is an underrated film. This is probably one of the most brutal war movies ever made. It's like Saving Private Ryan goes to Vietnam with an armload of grenade launchers. A large part of the reason for this is probably because it is a true story of events as they actually happenened in a battle in 1969. Very honest filmmaking with good acting and realistic battle scenes. (war)

In The Mouth Of Madness Apoccalyptic movie based on the concept that reality is not as completely solid as we would like to believe, and that everything we know could be only an illusion or a nightmare. (horror)

Kids Realism never seemed so surreal in excecution. (indie)

The Killing Fields Holocaust and genocide under the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Not a very good first date movie but if you've ever wondered what the hell happened in Cambodia, this will help to clear things up a bit. Just don't watch this movie if you are on anti-depressant medication. This some bleak filmmaking. (war/drama)

The Last Don Film adaptation of Mario Puzo's book. Very well done. Not as good as The Godfather, but then really what is? (crime/drama)

Lord Of The Flies Survivors stranded on a remote island after a wreck. They revert back to tribalism and kill each other for the resources on the island. Interesting take on the survival instinct and the frail bonds which really hold us to civilization. Make sure you read the book too. (classic)

Lord Of The Rings Trilogy I shouldn't have to tell you how fucking good these movies are. (action/science fiction)

Magnolia One of the best movies made in the last ten years. (drama)

The Man Who Saw Tomorrow This movie is hilarious. Very serious documentary about Nostradomous and how he predicted the world is going to end any day now. With bad 1970s hair, amateuer re enactments of historical events, and dire warnings of the impending nuclear holocaust set to ominous synthesizer music, this documentary is a fucking classic to rival Faces of Death (documentary)

The Matrix The rebirth of good science fiction and decent fight scenes in American cinema. (science fiction/action)

Menace II Society Definitely the most well made and intelligent film to grace the stereotypical growing up in the hood genre. Engaging plot, decent acting and lots of good old American ghetto violence and drug abuse. Also if you're ever going to learn to speak ebonics, this is definitely the movie to watch. Its like a graduate level course in gats, bitches, and 40s. (drama)

Monty Python And The Holy Grail A carnivorous rabbit taken out with a hand grenade, a group of knights on a quest to find nice shrubbery, and the most accurate portrayl of the French that I have ever seen. Get really drunk before you watch this movie and it will make a lot more sense. (comedy/cult)

A Nightmare On Elm Street You take your chances with the sequels, but the original still stands in my book as one of the all time horror classics. I didn't sleep for a week after watching this the first time. (horror)

Office Space Great movie about fucking with your boss. If you haven't seen this you definitely need to rent it. (comedy)

The Omen This movie is completely evil. A lot of really dark twisted satanic imagery, along with an interesting plot and at least 2 worthwhile sequels. (horror)

Patton Great war story and character study of an extremely flawed but powerful man. Incredible performance by George C. Scott. (war)

The Pianist Incredibly disturbing film about surviving in Nazi occupied Poland during WWII. (war)

Pink Floyd - Live At Pompeii 1972 Pink Floyd plays to an empty Roman amphitheatre in the ruins of Pompeii. This is a good vision of Pink Floyd in their younger days, showcasing some of their best material. Features extended versions of Echoes, Set The Controls, and Careful With That Axe. The live performance is blended with footage of the ruins and volcanic destruction, enhancing the whole effect. Also features interviews and footage from the recording of Dark Side Of The Moon. (music)

Plan 9 From Outer Space This movie is so fucking bad it has to be seen to be believed. (horror/cult)

Platoon The Vietnam war from an individual perspective. Flawless plot, excellent acting, and easily Oliver Stone's best work. (war)

Psycho The movie that took horror and gratuitous shower scenes to a whole new level. Perkins is one of the most convincing psychopaths I've ever seen. Really dark filmmaking, a horror classic. (horror)

Pulp Fiction Well written intelligent crime story featuring tons of violence, drug abuse, and hillbilly sadomasochism. Fun for the whole family. (action/crime)

Raging Bull You can't really do much better than a movie with Robert De Niro, Martin Scorcese, and Joe Pesci. True story of a washed up boxer from the 1940s and the brutal life he must lead inside and outside the ring. This movie is like the dark side of Rocky. Boxing as a metaphor for life, brutal, dirty, and hard. This is easily one of the ten best films ever made. (drama)

Red Dawn For some inexplicable reason, Russian paratroopers invade a small American city, but are foiled by local teenagers who carry out implausibly sophisticated acts of military sabotage. (action/adventure)

Reservoir Dogs Some of Tarantino's earliest work. An interesting take on hyperviolent crime films with very well developed characters. Michael Madsen is a fucking psycho. I can't believe he was in Free Willy after doing this shit. (crime/action)

Revenge of the Sith George Lucas finally redeems himself for six years of bullshit. Possibly the best movie in the entire Star Wars series. (science fiction)

The Ring Holy fucking shit this is scary. (horror)

The Rise And Fall Of The Third Reich Black and white documentary style film from sometime in the early 60's. An excellent in depth work on a complex topic and some interesting insights into human nature, obedience to authority, and the instability of human civilization in general. (documentary)

Roger And Me Populist antagonizer Michael Moore confronts corporate hypocrisy and greed for your entertainment. Filmed on location in lovely Flint,Michigan. (documentary)

Romper Stomper Russell Crowe leads a group of skinheads through various violent confrontations. This movie is a lot like clockwork orange but with real people and a modern setting. That makes it a whole lot more disturbing. (action/drama)

The Running Man Arnold Schwartzenegger battles a bunch of ex wrestlers to the death in a futuristic battledome match set in the ruins of Los Angeles and hosted in game show format by Richard Dawson from the Family Feud. This movie is just messed up. (science fiction)

Salvador Some early Oliver Stone work here. I get the feeling that the Dead Kennedy's "Holiday In Cambodia" should be somewhere on the soundtrack. Deadbeat journalist goes to El Salvador during the war in the late 70s. He finds that the line between good and evil isn't quite as clear anymore when you're on the other side of the news. Read Inevitable Revolutions before you see this movie and it will make a lot more sense. (drama/war)

Saving Private Ryan Without even mentioning the flawless acting and directing, this is easily the best war movie I have ever seen based on sheer fucking brutality and unflinching honesty alone. (war)

Scarface The world is yours. (crime/drama/action)

Schindler's List Dark extremely powerful movie about the consequences of man's inhumanity to man. (war/drama)

Seven This story is truly twisted. Interesting use of lighting, very graphic. (crime/mystery/suspense)

Shaft Some of the the greatest dialogue I have heard in any movie anywhere. Shaft is the man. He's the type of guy that would bitch slap you for talking shit before you even say anything. The dope ass wah wah guitar in the background helps to emphasise the point that Shaft is one bad mothafucka. Exploitation movies will never be the same again, put this one in the history books. (action/crime)

The Shawshank Redemption A guy gets sent to prison for something he didn't do and finds creative ways of dealing with the situation. (drama)

The Shining All work and no play makes Jack kill his family. (horror)

The Silence Of The Lambs Excellent criminal psychology movie. Anthony Hopkins is a very convincing psychopath. (crime/suspense)

Slap Shot Classic sports movie from the 70s about minor league hockey players with glasses beating the shit out of each other. (sports/comedy)

Sling Blade Billy Bob Thornton plays a lovable psychotic with a strong affection for french fried potatoes and decapitating people with lawnmower blades. (drama)

This Is Spinal Tap The documentary of fictional washed up heavy metal band Spinal Tap and their various problems. Funny intelligent and original look at the concept that would eventually become VH1 behind the music but with dancing midgets and song titles like Lick My Love Pump. (comedy)

The Spy Who Shagged Me Brutally honest depiction of English dentistry. (comedy)

Star Wars Trilogy This is possibly the greatest story ever told in science fiction. Completely brilliant. The special effects still look good 20 years later. Good acting, interesting characters, and amazing work all around. Of the three that followed, Phantom Menace is shit, Attack of The Clones is decent if unremarkable, Revenge of The Sith is brilliant and may be the best in the entrire series (science fiction)

Strange Brew Two drunk Canadians get a job at the local brewery and save the world by accident while looking for free beer. This movie is actually pretty fucking dumb. But I liked it eh, so take off. (comedy)

Taxi Driver Travis Bickle is the vigilante American anti-hero. An ordinary man pushing the limits of sanity, searching for justice and morality in a bleak world. This is a classic, one of the best films ever made. (drama)

Team America World Police America fuck yeah. This shit is hilarious. (drama)

The Terminator The war between man and machine. Post apoccalyptic cyborg travels back in time and fucks shit up in early 80s L.A. Besides having a very complex plot and trend setting special effects, there's also a lot of gratuitous violence and bad jokes. My favorite part is when Schwartzenegger (aforementioned killer cyborg)opens fire on the LAPD headquarters with an armload of automatic weapons. Rodney King would be proud. (science fiction)

The Thin Red Line Dark disturbing movie about the invasion of Guadacanal in WWII. (war)

Three Kings Very well made and insightful movie about the Gulf War and the total madness which it all really was. Some interesting use of colors and slow motion make for a really cool visual effect in the movie to go with the difficult subject matter it is trying to get across in the story. Stars Ice Cube for some reason. (action/war)

2001 Aside from the notable exceptions of Star Wars and Lord of The Rings, this is probably the greatest sci-fi film ever made. Along with legendary special effecs, there is a lot of subtle cereberal stuff going on here. Kubrick takes the surrealism of Clockwork Orange into outer space and the future. Jupiter is a really cool looking planet as well. Outstanding work all around. (science fiction)

Unforgiven This is one of the few truly realistic Westerns, simply because there are no good guys. Clint Eastwood is one of the best actors I've ever seen, and this is his best work yet. Excellent plot, good acting, and a final showdown that would make Travis Bickle proud, "Any man that don't want to get killed better clear on out the back". He meant what he said. (western)

We Were Soldiers Brutal look at the first major engagement of the Vietnam War. (war)

The Wall - Pink Floyd Scattered scenes, dream sequences, hallucinations, and animation are intermingled and set to the concept and music of Pink Floyd's Wall album. Film chronicles the life of ficticious rock star Pink and the process of his slow mental collapse and descent into the blackness of total isolation, apathy, and unrelenting rage. The animated sequences are incredible. Sure its all overblown and self-absorbed, but what would you expect from the greatest band on the planet. (music)
