The Forgotten Grief: NEWS & CONFERENCES
Twenty five years ago, when I began as a researcher in this field, I scoured the literature and news back to the turn of the century and found there were only 60-70 significant articles, and very little research. Over that time due to the hard work and concern of many, care for parents is now found in most hospitals or communities, and is available internationally through programs such as SHARE
and HAND. Over 40,000 families each year in this country alone experience the loss of an infant around the time of birth, and the devastating grief which if unsupported can lead to many disguised emotional problems later, often presenting themselves in an unknown aetiology. New Study May Help Reduce StillbirthApril 26, 2007
New Study May aid
in Understanding Stillbirth "That $15 million safe-sleeping campaign is credited with a 90 per cent fall in the number of cot deaths over the past two decades. Stubborn Stillbirth Rates Confound Experts
"About one in 200 pregnancies ends in a stillbirth and the numbers have stayed the same since the early 1990s. The Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health reports there were 3,600 stilbirths in 2005 and nearly 1,200 occurred just before women were due to give birth. Another 2,300 babies died in the first four weeks of life. The report says that more than half of stillbirths were classified as unexplained. " Other Links:

Missing Angels Act-Gov Bill Richardson Ignores PleasPHOENIX, May 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire
News Release:
Governor Ignores pleas Regarding Missing Angels Act"The MISSing Angels Bill helps provide much-needed comfort, dignity, and
documentation to women and their families experiencing the death of a baby
just prior to or during birth. All states, including New Mexico, require
the family to pay for funeral expenses, and a death certificate/report is
issued after a stillbirth. Yet, some states refuse to offer women the
choice of a birth certificate. It offers an option to women who give birth
to loved and wanted babies who die unexpectedly to choose a birth
certificate.
"I would assume that the last thing a presidential candidate would want
to do is knowingly wound thousands of grieving mothers after their baby's
death," said Daryl Logullo, Legislative Liaison for the MISS Foundation."

There are about 40 perinatal hospice programs across the country, according to Amy Kuebelbeck, co-founder of a website for parents, perinatalhospice.org."
