Tenormin: uses

Tenormin is a beta-blocker used to treat chest pain ( angina ) and high blood pressure. It's also used after an acute heart attack to improve survival. High blood pressure reduction helps prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems.

Tenormin works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body such as epinephrine on heart and blood vessels. This results in a lowering of heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

Tenormin: how to use

Take Tenormin by mouth, usually once daily; or as directed by your doctor. Use Tenormin regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. To help you remember, use it at same time each day.

Tenormin isn't effective if we use it only when chest pain or a migraine headache occurs. It's very important to take this medication regularly as prescribed to help prevent these conditions.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. It may take one or two weeks before full benefit of Tenormin takes effect. It's important to continue taking Tenormin even if we feel well. Most people with high blood pressure don't feel sick.

Do not suddenly stop taking Tenormin without consulting your doctor. Your condition may become worse when drug is suddenly stopped. Refer to the Warning section.

Tenormin: side effects

We may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness, tiredness, nausea, diarrhea, unusual dreams, leg pain, or vision problems as your body adjusts to medication. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Tenormin may reduce blood flow to your hands and feet, causing them to feel cold. Smoking may worsen this effect. Dress warmly and avoid tobacco use.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed Tenormin because he or she has judged that the benefit to we is greater than risk of side effects. Many people using Tenormin don't have serious side effects.

Tenormin: precautions

Before taking Tenormin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if we are allergic to it; or to other beta-blockers ( e. g. , metoprolol, propranolol ) ; or if you have any other allergies.

If you have diabetes, Tenormin may mask fast/pounding heartbeat we would usually feel when your blood sugar level falls too low ( hypoglycemia ) . Other symptoms of a low blood sugar level such as dizziness or sweating are unaffected by Tenormin.

Tenormin may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages.

To minimize dizziness and lightheadedness, get up slowly when rising from a seated or lying position.

Tenormin should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks ( e. g. , low birth weight ) and benefits with your doctor.

Tenormin passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.

Tenormin: interactions

Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring we for it. Do not start, stop or change dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.

Before using Tenormin, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription products we may use, especially of:

Tenormin: overdose

If overdose of Tenormin is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms of overdose may include unusually slow heartbeat, severe dizziness, slow or shallow breathing, weakness, or fainting.

Don't share Tenormin with others. Lifestyle changes such as stress reduction programs, exercise and dietary changes may increase effectiveness of this medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about lifestyle changes that might benefit you.

Have your blood pressure and pulse checked regularly while taking Tenormin. It may be best to learn how to monitor your own blood pressure and pulse. Discuss this with your doctor.

Tenormin: missed dose

If we miss a dose Tenormin, take it as soon as we remember, but not if it's within 8 hours of next dose. If it's within 8 hours of next dose, skip missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Don't double dose to catch up.

Tenormin: storage

Store Tenormin at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F ( between 20 and 25 degrees C ) away from light and moisture. Do not store Tenormin in bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.

Properly discard Tenormin when it's expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company for more details about how to safely discard your product.

Tenormin: warning

If we have chest pain ( angina ) or have heart disease ( e. g. , coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease, high blood pressure ) , don't stop using Tenormin without first consulting your doctor. Your condition may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. If your doctor decides we should no longer use Tenormin, you must gradually decrease your dose according to your doctor's instructions.

When gradually stopping Tenormin, it's recommended that you temporarily limit physical activity to decrease the work on the heart. Seek immediate medical attention if we develop: worsening chest pain, tightness or pressure in chest, chest pain spreading to jaw/neck/arm, sweating, trouble breathing or fast/irregular heartbeat.
