Edgar Wallace

(1875-1932)

Edgar Wallace was an immensely popular British writer of mystery thrillers.  His career began with some books of verse that more or less blatantly imitated Kipling.  However, his real success came in 1905, with the publication of Four Just Men.  This became a classic, and has been filmed several times in England.  It would be a Herculean feat to give any kind of correct overview of his works.  He wrote so much, and in so many genres. His stories are fast-moving and suspenseful, and have probably contributed more to modern mystery fiction than those of any other writer.  Wallace disdained any artistic pretenses, and his books do not appeal to highbrows.  Yet they often contain much intrinsic merit.  Wallace often worked in an overheated environment, while he drank immense quantities of highly-sweetened tea.  He once claimed that he never did any physical exercise.  Today, Wallace is still popular in Great Britain.  His readership in the U.S., however, is somewhat limited.  His impact has been greatly felt in the German motion-picture industry, where many of his books were made into excellent screen thrillers.
