Clarence E. Mulford

(1883-1956)

Clarence Edward Mulford was one of the most popular writers of western fiction during the late-Edwardian era.  When he wrote his first books, he had never even been out West, but later he traveled to various sites of interest.  During his lifetime he accumulated an enormous collection of western Americana.  His card file of western data included more than 17,000 cards and covered everything from the Missouri River to the dying out of the Great Western Cattle Trail.   He is best known today for his "Bar 20" collections, which center around the adventures of Hopalong Cassidy.  Besides writing, one of his main interests was big-caliber revolver shooting, over distances of 300 to 500 yards.  This hobby forced him to buy several acres of land, with a high hill for a backstop.  Many of his books were made into motion-pictures.
