Jack London
(1876-1916)
Jack London is the Rudyard Kipling of America. Born in poverty, he led an adventurous life as vagrant, oyster-pirate, and sailor, before heading north during the Klondike Gold Rush of '98. Although he found no gold, he came back with a wealth of experience. He began writing numerous short stories, and soon left his postal job to become a full-time writer. Following the success of his first books he traveled extensively, and was married twice in a three-year period. In 1905, he ran for mayor of Oakland, CA, on a socialist ticket, but received only 981 votes. He made tons of money, and spent it lavishly and recklessly. One of his pet projects was an ornate castle, which caught fire before its construction was completed. He turned out a massive quantity of fiction, but his best work undoubtedly hails from the 1900-1907 period. Overwork, financial troubles, and heavy drinking deteriorated his later output, and in 1916 he died of kidney poisoning-- although some have claimed it was suicide. The critical reaction to his works has always been very mixed. He certainly was a great story-teller, although some have doubted the reliability of his facts. In a 1907 article in Everybody's Magazine, Teddy Roosevelt took him to task for his "unrealistic" portrayals of nature.
