Rudyard Kipling

(1865-1936)

By the time England's King Edward assumed the throne in 1901, Rudyard Kipling was already well-established as a man of letters.  Although his best work undoubtedly hails from the late-Victorian period, Kipling produced several important works during the Edwardian age.  One of these is the famous jungle novel Kim (1901).  Other titles include Traffics and Discoveries (1904), Puck of Pook's Hill (1906), and Actions and Reactions (1909).  Kipling's prose and verse are noted for their intense British nationalism, which sometimes makes him unpalatable to American readers, though this quality is amply offset by the genuine merit of the work itself.  Kipling has a Romantic side to his nature, but he is more often a realist.  Some of his stories take on a cynical aspect of the world which can be quite caustic to those on the receiving end of his observations.  But when all is said, there are few authors who can hold their own against him in versatility and craftsmanship.  He has a rare ability to pierce behind the veneer of civilized life and lay bare the true motives and intents of the actors therein.  Aside from his popularity in prose, Kipling's verse sold quite as well.  Of late years he has become somewhat less popular due to some of his social and political views.  Howbeit, his Jungle Book (1894) remains one of the most frequently read and adapted children's books of all time.
